Joshua holds the two and a half tribes to the terms of Numbers 32:20-22. They cross armed ahead of their brothers and go home only when the land is subdued. Their families stay east of the river, so these men fight for ground they will never live on.

Wesley takes rest to mean a place of rest. Henry draws a duty from it: those whom God has settled owe help to brothers who are unsettled. He sets beside it David in 2 Samuel 7, who asked what he could do for God once God had given him rest.
