This resumes the thread of the sentence which began at Jer 29:25, but was left there not completed. Here, in this thirtieth verse, it is completed, not however in continuity, but by a new period.

Zephaniah the priest reads Shemaiah's letter to Jeremiah. Shemaiah is charged like Hananiah before him, “he has preached rebellion against the LORD,” and he has made the exiles “trust in a lie.” His sentence cuts him out of the future his letter claimed to hasten.

The Lord answers Shemaiah by a fresh word to Jeremiah. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that the sentence begun at verse 25 is left unfinished there and taken up here in a new form. Zephaniah had read the letter aloud to Jeremiah, and the reply follows.
