Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871)
The Jews being "punished in this place" will be a sign that their view is false, and God's threat true. He calls it "a sign unto you," because God's prediction is equivalent to the event, so that they may even now take it as a sign. When fulfilled it would cease to be a sign to them: for they would be dead.

This will be a sign to you
on Jeremiah 44:29-30
“I will deliver Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies,” just as Zedekiah was delivered to Nebuchadnezzar. Hophra, called Apries by the Greek historians, was later overthrown by his general Amasis. The parallel tells the company that Egypt is no safer than Jerusalem.

5 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods. 6 Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.

This shall be a sign - Signs are usually antecedent to the thing signified, but the word is taken in a larger notion in this place for that which should attend the thing signified by it.
And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the Lord, that I will punish you in this place,....
