Jehovah's compassion on Jacob frames the chapter: Israel is restored to its land and rules its former oppressors. Then follows a taunt-song against the king of Babylon: the whole earth rests, the fir trees and cedars of Lebanon rejoice, and Sheol stirs its dead kings to greet him. The song peaks in the fall of the 'day-star, son of the morning' (Hebrew helel), whose five 'I will' boasts (culminating in 'I will make myself like the Most High'), end in the uttermost parts of the pit, denied even burial. Jehovah of hosts swears to break the Assyrian in his land, a purpose stretched over all nations. A closing burden, dated to the year king Ahaz died, warns Philistia not to rejoice, for Jehovah has founded Zion as refuge for the afflicted.
