on Judges 20:6-7

Chapter 19 said twelve pieces were sent throughout Israel, and here he says “throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance”. The charge of “a lewd and disgraceful act in Israel” is a set phrase, said of Dinah at Genesis 34:7, in the law at Deuteronomy 22:21 and of Achan at Joshua 7:15. His last words, “give your advice and verdict here and now”, invite the assembly to judge.

The Levite appeals to the whole assembly as Israelites and asks for a decision on the spot. Wesley reads the appeal as a charge to a people in covenant with the holy God, bound to punish such a deed. Henry notes that the answer comes at once.
