The name means the LORD will see, and Clarke marks it as the same verb Abraham used in his answer at verse 8. Jerome reports Jews of his own day saying it in distress, that as God had pity on Abraham so He will have pity on them.

A clear way of spiritual understanding is opened for those who know how to hear these words. For everything that has been done reaches to the vision, for it is said that "the Lord saw." But the vision that "the Lord saw" is in the spirit so that you too might see these things in the spirit which are written. And, just as there is nothing corporeal in God, so also you might perceive nothing corporeal in all these things. Rather, you too might beget a son Isaac in the spirit when you begin to have "the fruit of the Spirit, joy, peace." … Now you beget joy if "you count it all joy when you fall into various temptations" and you offer that joy in sacrifice to God.For when you have approached God joyfully, he again gives back to you what you have offered and says to you, "You will see me again, and your heart shall rejoice, and no man shall take your joy from you." So, therefore, what you have offered to God you shall receive back multiplied. Something like this, although in another figure, is related in the Gospels when in a parable someone is said to have received a pound that he might engage in business, and the master of the house demanded the money. But if you have caused five to be multiplied to ten, they themselves are given to you, they are granted to you. For hear what Scripture says: "Take his pound, and give it to him who has ten pounds."57 So, therefore, we appear at least to engage in business for the Lord, but the profits of the business go to us. And we appear to offer victims to the Lord, but the things we offer are given back to us. For God needs nothing, but he wishes us to be rich; he desires our progress through each individual thing.

Jehovah - jireh - יהוה יראה Yehovah-yireh, literally interpreted in the margin, The Lord will see; that is, God will take care that every thing shall be done that is necessary for the comfort and support of them who trust in him: hence the words are usually translated, The Lord will provide; so our translators, Gen 22:8, אלהים יראה Elohim yireh, God will provide; because his eye ever affects his heart, and the wants he sees his hand is ever ready to supply.

I believe that the Truth of God contained in the expression, "Jehovah-jireh," was ruling Abraham's thoughts long before he uttered it and appointed it to be the memorial name of the place where the Lord had provided a substitute for Isaac. It was this thought, I think, which enabled him to act as promptly as he did under the trying circumstances. His reason whispered within him, "If you slay your son, how can God keep His promise to you that your seed shall be as many as the stars of Heaven?"

Abraham lifted up his eyes . . . and behold . . . a ram, &c.--No method was more admirably calculated to give the patriarch a distinct idea of the purpose of grace than this scenic representation: and hence our Lord's allusion to it (Joh 8:56).

It was this thought, I think, which enabled him to act as promptly as he did under the trying circumstances. He answered that suggestion by saying to himself, "Jehovah will see to it!" As he went upon that painful journey with his dearly beloved son at his side, the suggestion may have come to him, "How will you meet Sarah when you return home, having covered your hands in the blood of her son? How will you meet your neighbors when they hear that Abraham, who professed to be such a holy man, has killed his son?" That answer still sustained his heart—"Jehovah will see to it! Jehovah will see to it! He will not fail in His word. Perhaps He will raise my son from the dead, but in some way or other He will justify my obedience to Him and vindicate His own command. Jehovah will see to it." This was a quietus to every mistrustful thought. I pray that we may drink into this Truth of God and be refreshed by it. If we follow the Lord's bidding, He will see to it that we shall not be ashamed or confused. If we come into great need by following His command, He will see to it that the loss shall be recompensed. If our difficulties multiply and increase so that our way seems completely blocked up, Jehovah will see to it that the road shall be cleared. The Lord will see us through in the way of holiness if we are only willing to be thorough in it and dare to follow where ever He leads.
