Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

Nehemiah 7:37 counts Lod, Hadid and Ono at 721, four fewer. Nehemiah also sets the entry after Jericho, where Ezra places it before, so the two rolls differ in order here as well as in count.
