Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

Nehemiah 7:12 gives Elam the same 1,254. Elam is one of five households in verses 3 to 20 counted above a thousand, with Parosh, Pahath-moab, Azgad and Bigvai. Verse 31 names a second Elam with the identical figure.
