Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

Nehemiah 7:21 gives the same 98. Both rolls trace this branch of Ater's family through Hezekiah. The same name Ater returns in verse 42, heading one of the six families of gatekeepers.
