Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

Bethlehem opens the entries headed the men of a town. Albert Barnes reads each to his own town as the city where a man's forefathers had belonged, and these entries count by those cities. Nehemiah 7:26 joins Bethlehem and Netophah in one entry of 188.
