Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

Matthew Henry finds it strange that this second Elam counts exactly the same number as the first in verse 7, 1,254. Nehemiah 7:12 and 7:34 carry the same match.
