Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

Matthew Henry notes that Adonikam signifies a high lord and that the family's count, 666, is the number of the beast in Revelation 13. Nehemiah 7:18 counts the family at 667, one more.
