Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

Nehemiah 7:13 counts Zattu at 845. The two figures differ by exactly one hundred, and Ezra's is the higher. Zattu is one of four entries where Ezra counts more than Nehemiah, with Arah, Bethel and Ai, and Lod, Hadid and Ono.
