This site's exposition

the descendants of Parosh, 2,172

on Ezra 2:3-35

Verses 3 to 35 name family after family. Adam Clarke notes the pattern: a person's name marks descendants, and a place name marks its former inhabitants. John Gill sets the list beside the parallel roll in Nehemiah 7 and finds the two agree in substance while differing in some numbers.

This site's exposition

the descendants of Azmaveth, 42

Nehemiah 7:28 counts the same 42 as the men of Beth-azmaveth. Ezra heads this entry the descendants of Azmaveth, the form used for families, though it stands among the towns. The count of 42 is the smallest in the chapter.
