Amaziah outlives Jehoash by fifteen years, years the commentators read as a long decline after the humiliation at Jerusalem's broken wall and plundered temple. A conspiracy rises against him in the capital itself, and he flees south to Lachish, a fortified city in Judah, but the conspirators follow and kill him there. His body is brought back on horses and buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David, honor given to the corpse that the living king had lost.

HE IS SLAIN BY A CONSPIRACY. 19, 20. they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem--Amaziah's apostasy (2Ch 25:27) was followed by a general maladministration, especially the disastrous issue of the war with Israel.
