Amaziah gets the meeting he asked for at Beth-shemesh, and Judah breaks before Israel with every man fleeing to his tent. Josephus adds that panic seized the army before the lines even closed. The king who would not hear Jehoash's parable now looks him in the face, and loses.

The Chronicler gives the cause of the rout, as Albert Barnes noted from 2 Chronicles 25:14 and 20. After beating Edom, Amaziah had set up the gods of Seir as his own. The Targum reads that each man fled to his city.
