"In those days," we are told, "Hezekiah was sick unto death, and he prayed to the Lord, and the Lord heard him and gave him a sign," that, namely of which we read in the fourth book of the kingdoms, which was given by Isaiah the prophet through the going back of the sun. "But," it says, "he did not respond to the benefits which he had received, for his heart was proud. And wrath was kindled against him and against Judah and Jerusalem.

These two verses are Chronicles’ own: “because his heart was proud, Hezekiah did not repay the favor shown to him”, and wrath followed. John Wesley names three mercies behind the pride: the Assyrian victory, the recovery from sickness, and the honor of Babylon’s embassy.

The wrath was held back for a time. Isaiah 39:7 tells where it would fall, on descendants of Hezekiah serving in the palace of the king of Babylon. John Gill reads the verse as a delay until the days of his son's sons.

And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. The formidable design of Sennacherib against Hezekiah's kingdom, and the vigorous attempt he made upon it. This Sennacherib was now, as Nebuchadnezzar was afterwards, the terror and scourge and great oppressor of that part of the world.

Humbled himself - Awoke from his sleep, was sorry for his sin, deprecated the wrath of God, and the Divine displeasure was turned away from him.
Hezekiah humbled himself - Perhaps this is the self-humiliation of which Jeremiah speaks (marginal reference) as following on a certain prophecy uttered by Micah. The prophecy Mic 3:12 is by some referred to the earlier part of the reign of Hezekiah; but there is nothing to show that it was not delivered about this time.
