Romans 8:1-2

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit: the wretched man's cry of 7:24 finds its answer in a legal verdict rather than a felt improvement, katakrima, the judge's own sentence, declared void for everyone standing in Christ. The site's own tradition reads the verse as the founder's anchor for eternal security, John 10:28-29 in Paul's own courtroom language, the Son's hand and the Father's hand holding what no future accusation can touch. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death: a second law now overrides the first, the Spirit's law of life outranking the law of sin and death that chapter 7 exposed, freedom stated as an accomplished fact rather than a hoped-for one.

Romans 8:3-4

condemned sin in the flesh: For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: the law's weakness was never in itself but in the flesh it worked on, and where law could only demand, God acted, sending the Son en homoiomati sarkos hamartias, in the likeness of sinful flesh, a phrase the bench guards carefully, real humanity without Christ's own sin, and at the cross sin itself stood condemned in that flesh. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit: the law's own righteous requirement, dikaioma, is met not by the believer's effort but is fulfilled in those who now walk by the Spirit, the goal of the incarnation and the cross stated as one sentence.

Romans 8:5-6

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit: two classes of humanity are drawn by what occupies the mind, phronousin, the settled bent of thought and desire rather than a single lapse. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace: the two minds issue in two destinies stated as present realities, death already operating in the fleshly mind and life and peace already possessed in the spiritual one, and the bench reads life and peace together as the full Old Testament shalom now given a New Testament source, the indwelling Spirit rather than circumstance.

Romans 8:7-8

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be: Paul states the unregenerate mind's condition at its full severity, not merely weak toward God but in active hostility, and not merely unwilling to submit to God's law but constitutionally unable, oude gar dunatai, neither indeed can it. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God: the conclusion follows without softening, the flesh's fundamental incapacity for pleasing God is why the Spirit's coming, not mere reformation, is the only remedy the chapter offers, and every verse that follows builds on this stated impossibility.

Romans 8:9

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you: Paul turns from the class in general to the Roman believers directly, their new standing marked by an indwelling Spirit stated as a settled fact, oikei, dwells, a permanent residence rather than a visit. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his: the verse makes the Spirit's indwelling the very mark of belonging to Christ, no believer left to wonder whether some higher tier of Christian possesses the Spirit and some lower tier does not, since possession of the Spirit and possession by Christ are the same fact named twice.

Romans 8:10-11

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness: the body still carries death's sentence from Adam even in the believer, yet the Spirit is already life within, on the ground of a righteousness already reckoned. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you: the same resurrection power now resident in the believer guarantees a future bodily resurrection, the Spirit's present ministry read here as living and continuing in the church exactly as the founder's ruling holds, the Spirit who raised Christ still active and not withdrawn to an apostolic past.

Romans 8:12-13

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh: the indicative of verses 1-11 turns to imperative, the believer's debt is named only to say what it is not, no obligation whatsoever remains to the flesh that once held dominion. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live: mortify, thanatoute, put to death, is the Spirit's own work carried out through the believer's active cooperation, and the bench reads the warning at full strength alongside the security already stated, the same Spirit who guarantees resurrection is the one by whom the flesh's deeds are killed daily.

Romans 8:14-15

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God: leading by the Spirit is offered as evidence of sonship rather than a rare higher experience, huioi theou, sons in the fullest legal sense. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father: huiothesia, adoption, is a Roman legal term Paul's readers would have known precisely, a formal, irrevocable transfer into a new family with full inheritance rights, and Abba, the Aramaic word for father a small child would use, carried straight into Greek prayer as the church's own address to God.

Romans 8:16-17

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: summartyrei, bears joint witness alongside, describes two testimonies agreeing, the believer's own spirit and the Holy Spirit's inner confirmation together, a verse the site reads as a further plank under the founder's security ruling, assurance given as the Spirit's own present ministry rather than a feeling to be doubted. And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together: the inheritance is named at its fullest extent, joint-heirs with Christ himself, with suffering set as the path glory travels rather than a condition threatening to void the inheritance.

Romans 8:18-19

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us: logizomai, the same accounting verb from chapter 4's righteousness reckoned to Abraham, now applied to a calculation Paul has made and settled, present suffering weighed against future glory and found to be no comparison at all. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God: apokaradokia pictures a head craned forward in eager watching, and creation itself is personified as straining toward a day defined by the believer's own unveiling, the whole created order's hope bound up in the church's glorification.

Romans 8:20-22

For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope: the bench reads the subjecting one as God himself pronouncing the curse of Genesis 3:17-19, the ground cursed for Adam's sake, yet even that judgment carries hope folded inside it from the start. Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God: creation's own future emancipation is tied directly to the church's, the same Adam whose sin subjected the ground being undone in the last Adam whose sons will share their liberty with it. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now: the birth-pang image, sunodinei, sets creation's present suffering inside a framework of coming delivery rather than meaningless decay.

Romans 8:23-25

the firstfruits of the Spirit: And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body: aparche, firstfruits, is the first sheaf that guarantees the rest of the harvest, so the Spirit already given is itself the pledge of the bodily resurrection still to come, adoption here named in its final stage, the body's own redemption completing what verse 15 began. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it: hope in Paul's vocabulary is confident expectation of a certain but unseen future, and the waiting itself is named as patient endurance rather than doubt, a groaning saint no less secure for groaning.

Romans 8:26-27

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered: sunantilambanetai, helpeth, pictures the Spirit taking hold of the load alongside the believer at the exact point of weakness Paul names, the believer's own ignorance of what to pray, and the Spirit's own intercessory groanings answer the creation's groaning of verse 22 and the believer's groaning of verse 23 with a third groaning from within. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God: this present intercessory ministry of the Spirit is taught here as the church's living possession, exactly as the site's own tradition holds every gift and ministry of the Spirit to be, never withdrawn to an apostolic age already closed.

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose: one of the best-loved verses in the epistle promises not that all things are good but that God works all of them, sunergei, together toward good, a promise the bench limits precisely by its own two qualifiers, to them that love God and to the called according to his purpose, never a universal guarantee detached from those two marks. The verse stands as the hinge into the golden chain that follows, the ground of the promise about to be laid out link by link from foreknowledge to glorification.

Romans 8:29-30

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren: the golden chain's first two links, foreknowledge and predestination, are debated between readings, the Reformed reading foreknow as God's sovereign choice of a people, the Arminian reading it as God's foresight of a response, both ancient and both held with their advocates named, and the conforming goal, sunmorphous, is stated without dispute, Christ's image reproduced in many brothers with him as firstborn among them. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified: the chain runs five links with no dropped stitch, glorified stated in the past tense though still future, so certain in God's purpose that Paul writes of it as already accomplished, the founder's own security anchor resting on exactly this unbroken chain from foreknowledge to glory.

Romans 8:31-32

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us: the chapter's final movement opens with the diatribe's question turned into triumph, the golden chain just stated making the question its own answer, no adversary can outweigh the God who has already bound himself to this outcome. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things: the argument runs from the greater gift to the lesser, the cross itself being the costliest possible proof of God's commitment, so that every lesser gift needed to finish what the cross began is guaranteed by the same logic, a fortiori reasoning the bench calls Paul's strongest form of assurance in the letter.

Romans 8:33-34

Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth: Paul stages a courtroom scene with no prosecutor able to stand, since the judge himself has already handed down the verdict of justification, a charge brought against those God has declared righteous having nowhere to land. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us: four facts about Christ are stacked as the believer's defense, his death, his resurrection, his session at God's right hand, and his ongoing intercession, every stage of Christ's work still actively securing the believer rather than a finished transaction left behind.

Romans 8:35-37

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword: seven trials are named, each one a real threat the Roman believers would face within a decade under Nero, and the list is deliberately exhaustive of what this present life can throw at a saint. As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter: Psalm 44:22 is quoted to show that suffering unto death has always been the normal lot of the faithful rather than a sign of God's abandonment, and nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us, hypernikomen, more than conquerors, states a victory won not by escaping the trials but in the very midst of them.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord: the list sweeps every category persuasion could think of, life and death, the unseen ranks of angels and powers, all time and all space, and one final catch-all clause for anything the list might have missed, and the site reads the verse as the climax of the founder's own security ruling, the Son's hand and the Father's hand of John 10:28-29 now proven from every direction Scripture can name. The chapter that opened with no condemnation closes with no separation, the two negatives framing everything the Spirit does between them.
