Psalm 89

Psalms 89:1-4

The Hebrew title, which the reader floor does not show, reads Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite; 1 Kings 4:31 names Ethan alongside Heman as a wise man Solomon's own wisdom surpassed, and the two are elsewhere counted among David's appointed Levitical singers. The psalm announces its own method in its first line: mercy and faithfulness, sung together, are the pair the whole psalm will test against what comes later. I have sworn unto David my servant sets the covenant of 2 Sam 7 as the ground for everything that follows until the crisis breaks in at verse 38, and the Selah at the end of verse 4 marks that oath as the foundation the rest of the psalm builds on.

Psalms 89:5-8

The praise widens from the covenant to the God who made it: the heavens themselves praise thy wonders, and the assembly of the saints, read by the older writers as the heavenly council rather than the earthly congregation, stands in reverence around him. Who in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord turns the psalm's confidence outward, from David's own security to the greatness of the one who swore to him. O Lord God of hosts names the covenant keeper by his largest title before the psalm turns to describe what that greatness has done.

Psalms 89:9-13

Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces sits beside Job 26:12 and Isaiah 51:9, where Rahab names the chaos of the sea subdued at creation; the same word can also stand for Egypt, as it does at Isaiah 30:7, and the commentators are divided on which sense governs here, sea monster or nation, without either reading canceling the other. Thou rulest the raging of the sea states the same sovereignty in plain language, the waves stilled by a word. Tabor and Hermon, one west of the Jordan and one east, stand for the whole land rejoicing in the name of the God who also made the north and the south, creation itself recruited as a witness to the covenant's Maker.

Psalms 89:14-18

Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne ties God's own government to the same throne the covenant promises David, so that the king's security rests on the character of the King who appointed him. The joyful sound of verse 15, which later Jewish reading connects to the trumpet blast of the sacred seasons, marks a people who know how to recognize God's presence and walk in it. Our horn shall be exalted and the Holy One of Israel is our king close the section on a note the crisis will later reverse point for point.

Psalms 89:19-23

The psalm turns to direct speech: thou spakest in vision to thy holy one opens the oracle behind the covenant, read by most of the bench as Nathan's word to David in 2 Sam 7 put back into God's own mouth. I have laid help upon one that is mighty and I have exalted one chosen out of the people state the choice as God's initiative before David's own standing enters the account. The promise that the enemy shall not exact upon him answers, in advance, every reversal the psalm will name later in the very same terms.

Psalms 89:24-29

My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him sets the paired words of verse 1 now resting on David personally, and I will set his hand also in the sea, his right hand in the rivers describes a dominion from coast to river, the language of a kingship reaching past one nation's borders. Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth is read by the older Christian writers as reaching past David to the greater son the covenant ultimately secures, a reading they hold by name rather than a claim the psalm states outright. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven repeats the covenant's own terms from verse 4, now sworn in the fullest language the psalm will use.

Psalms 89:30-34

The psalm names its own safeguard against a covenant broken by human failure: if his children forsake my law, walk not in my judgments, break my statutes, the stated answer is discipline, the rod and stripes, not rejection. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips states the psalm's central claim in its plainest terms, correction falling on unfaithful heirs while the covenant itself is not put up for renegotiation. The commentators read this as the psalm's own theology of chastening held apart from abandonment, a distinction the crisis beginning four verses later will strain to its limit.

Psalms 89:35-37

sworn by my holiness: Once have I sworn by my holiness anchors the promise in God's own character rather than in circumstance, an oath that could not be broken without God ceasing to be holy. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me, as a faithful witness in heaven, compares the promise's permanence to what the psalmist can see overhead every day, and the Selah at the end of verse 37 closes the whole section of unbroken promise before the psalm's tone changes without warning. Jeremiah 33:20-21 later argues the same permanence from the fixed order of day and night, the commentators noting the shared figure without claiming this verse as its source.

Psalms 89:38-45

But thou hast cast off and abhorred breaks the psalm's confidence with no transition, and what follows answers the promises of the first half term by term: the covenant sworn is now made void, the crown once secured is now profaned, cast to the ground, the hedges that protected him broken down. Thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground is the psalm's sharpest line, the anointing sung at verse 20 undone in the very terms it was granted. The psalm does not explain the reversal or soften it; it names what has happened to the covenant's own promises and leaves them standing beside the crisis unresolved, which is the question the whole third book of the Psalter is built to hold rather than settle.

Psalms 89:46-48

The complaint turns personal and universal at once: how long, Lord, wilt thou hide thyself for ever asks what every earlier lament in the book has asked, while remember how short my time is widens the psalmist's own mortality into every man's. What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death answers itself, and the Selah at the end of verse 48 lets the question stand rather than resolving it with a quick word of comfort.

Psalms 89:49-52

Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth returns to the oath of verses 3 and 35 and asks God to be faithful to his own words, the psalm's last argument resting on God's own character rather than anything in the psalmist to deserve it. How I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people carries the personal wound into the nation's own shame, the anointed one's suffering read by the psalm as the people's own. Verse 52, Blessed be the Lord for evermore, Amen and Amen, closes not only the psalm but the whole third book of the Psalter, the same doxology form that seals books one, two and four, praise spoken over an unresolved question rather than after its answer.
