Then--when the covenant was established, of whose execution the exalted views of God now given furnish assurance. thou . . . to thy holy one--or godly saint, object of favor (Ps 4:3). Nathan is meant (2Sa 7:17; 1Ch 17:3-15). laid help--literally, "given help." David was chosen and then exalted.

In verse 26 the son calls God Father, and in verse 27 God makes him the firstborn, highest of the earth's kings. Revelation 1:5 gives those titles to Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

The king answers God's promise with a cry of trust. Albert Barnes read the three titles as the king's whole hope, and linked the Rock of salvation to Psalm 18:2. Matthew Henry heard the same cry from Christ in His agony, in Matthew 26, when He called God His Father.

He shall cry unto me, Thou art my Father - He shall appeal to me, or come to me as a Father, and as his only hope and defense. My God - He shall come to me as God, and shall recognize me as his God, his only trust and hope. And the rock of my salvation - See the notes at Psa 18:2. The meaning of all this is, that he would at all times recognize him as his only trust and hope, and that he would be faithful on his part to God.
