Psalm 144

Psalms 144:1-2

The Septuagint's title for this psalm adds a note the Hebrew text does not carry, with reference to Goliath, a tradition Spurgeon and Delitzsch both report without treating it as settled. The wording of these two verses is not new: teacheth my hands to war repeats Psalm 18:34 exactly, and the string of titles that follows, fortress, high tower, deliverer, shield, in whom I trust, gathers up Psalm 18:2 almost word for word. Barnes reads the borrowing as deliberate, a warrior king praying back his own earlier praise into a new occasion.

Psalms 144:3-4

The question echoes Psalm 8:4 in its very shape, what is man, and the son of man, but the two psalms answer it in opposite directions. Psalm 8 marvels that so small a creature is crowned with glory and honor; here the same question turns to man's shortness of days, a shadow that passeth away. Delitzsch reads the pairing as the Psalter's own honest range, the same creature small enough to vanish and great enough for God to notice.

Psalms 144:5-6

The prayer asks for a theophany in the manner of Sinai, God's own descent making the mountains smoke, and again the language runs close to Psalm 18:9-14, where lightning and arrows scatter the enemy in the same terms. Gill takes the smoking mountains as borrowed imagery rather than a claim of a new event, the storm theophany David already knew put to fresh use. The request is not for information but for intervention, come down and act.

Psalms 144:7-8

The great waters and the strange children name a real danger, foreign enemies whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood, the hand raised to swear an oath used instead to break one. Henry reads the phrase as treaty language, men whose sworn word cannot be trusted, which is why deliverance and not merely victory is the request. The plea from above sets God's help against a danger that comes precisely through broken human speech.

Psalms 144:9

The new song turns the psalm from petition to promise, the ten-stringed instrument named as the fullest praise the singer owns. Spurgeon notes that a new song answers a new mercy, the vow made before the deliverance is granted rather than after, praise staged ahead of the answer it expects.

Psalms 144:10-11

The psalm names its own singer here, David his servant, delivered from the hurtful sword, the only place in the chapter the king speaks of himself by name rather than by pronoun. The plea of verses 7 and 8 returns almost word for word, rid me and deliver me from the hand of strange children, a repetition Delitzsch reads as the prayer circling back before it can move forward into the closing vision. Barnes notes that salvation belongs to kings only as it is given, never as a right they hold in themselves.

Psalms 144:12-13

The psalm turns from war to the peace war is fought to secure, sons like healthy plants and daughters like the polished corner stones of a palace, ordinary household hope pictured in courtly language. The full garners follow, the household's food supply named before its herds, the plain order of a family's needs. Gill takes the shift from battlefield to granary as the whole point of the earlier plea, the sword sought only so the harvest can be gathered in peace.

Psalms 144:14-15

Strong oxen, no breach in the wall, no going out under siege, and no complaining in the streets name a land at rest from both war and want, each line the plain opposite of what verses 5 through 8 feared. The psalm closes on a double happy, the word repeated once for the general case and once for the nation whose God is the Lord, the second naming the ground the first stands on. Spurgeon reads the closing line as the whole psalm's answer to its own opening cry, strength for war ending in a people who no longer need it.
