Matthew 7:1-2

Judge not forbids a censorious, condemning verdict on others, the kind of judgment only God is competent to render on the heart, not the discernment the same chapter requires just a few verses later at verse 6 and verse 15. With what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged states a principle of reciprocity, that the measure a person applies to others becomes, in God's own dealing, the measure applied back to him. The commentators read the warning as aimed chiefly at the harsh, hypocritical judging that follows in verses 3 to 5, not at every moral evaluation a disciple must still make.

Matthew 7:3-4

The mote, a small speck or splinter, and the beam, a heavy roof-timber, set an absurd contrast to expose the hypocrisy of fault-finding, a critic straining to remove another's small failing while blind to his own gross one. The image likely drew on a proverb already current among the rabbis about faultfinders, and Jesus sharpens it into a direct rebuke of censorious disciples rather than a general comment on carpentry. Considerest not names the blindness itself as the deeper problem, worse than the beam it prevents a person from seeing.

Matthew 7:5

Thou hypocrite names the fault-finder directly, the same word used through chapter 6 of those who perform righteousness for an audience, now applied to a different performance, correcting others while excusing oneself. The order commanded is not that faults in others go unaddressed but that self-examination comes first, cast out the beam, before a person is fit to help remove another's smaller failing. Then shalt thou see clearly promises a real capacity to help once the hypocrisy is dealt with, the verse ending in restored usefulness rather than in silence toward a brother's fault.

Matthew 7:6

That which is holy and pearls both name something precious and sacred, and dogs and swine, unclean animals under the law, picture those who cannot value or receive it, turning instead to trample and to tear. The verse balances the two preceding sections, not judging harshly, yet not offering sacred things without discernment either, so this chapter's opening command against censorious judgment is not a call to indiscriminate exposure of holy things to open contempt. The commentators read the warning as aimed at persistent, hostile rejection rather than at ordinary unbelief still open to hearing.

Matthew 7:7-8

Ask, seek, and knock rise in intensity, from a simple request to an active search to a persistent knocking, and each verb is answered in kind, given, find, opened, a threefold promise repeated in reverse order in verse 8 for emphasis. The tense in Greek carries a continuing sense, keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking, prayer pictured as sustained rather than a single attempt abandoned if the first request seems unanswered. The promise stands in the same paragraph as the Lord's Prayer of chapter 6, prayer's confidence resting on the Father addressed there.

Matthew 7:9-10

A stone resembles the round loaves common in that day's baking closely enough to make the cruelty of the substitution vivid, and a serpent could resemble a Nile fish or eel closely enough for the same effect. Both illustrations picture an evil that no ordinary father would commit against his own child, setting up the argument from the lesser to the greater that verse 11 completes. The two pairs, bread and stone, fish and serpent, cover the two staple foods of a Galilean table.

Matthew 7:11

Being evil concedes plainly that even fallen human parents, imperfect and sinful as they are, still know how to give good gifts to their own children, and the argument moves from that lesser certainty to a greater one, how much more the Father in heaven. The verse assumes rather than argues human sinfulness, taking it as too obvious to need proof, and builds the case for God's generosity on top of it. Luke's parallel at 11:13 names the Holy Spirit specifically as the good gift, and the commentators read Matthew's broader good things as encompassing that gift among others.

Matthew 7:12

the law and the prophets: The golden rule states positively what many rabbis and philosophers before Jesus had stated only negatively, do not do to others what you would not want done to you, and the positive form asks more, active kindness rather than mere restraint from harm. For this is the law and the prophets closes the body of the Sermon with the same summary Jesus gives the two great commandments at 22:40, love toward God and neighbor as the whole of what Scripture requires. The rule is not offered as a stand-alone ethic detached from that command to love but as its practical outworking in daily dealing with others.

Matthew 7:13-14

Strait, an old spelling meaning narrow or constricted, and broad describe two gates and two ways that picture two whole ways of living rather than a single decision only, since the way, not only the gate, is walked over a lifetime. Many go the broad way and few find the narrow one, a proportion that runs against any assumption that the majority's religious practice marks the safe path. The image sets the whole preceding Sermon as itself a description of the narrow way, its ethic the very road being commended over the wide one leading to destruction.

Matthew 7:15

sheep’s clothing: This is the first sounding of the shepherd and sheep thread that runs through the Gospel to the smitten shepherd of 26:31, and it opens the thread on a warning note, wolves that come disguised as sheep rather than as declared enemies. False prophets are known not by their claims, which the next paragraph shows can include prophesying and working wonders in Jesus' own name, but by their fruits, the test verse 16 states directly. The warning assumes disciples must exercise real discernment even while forbidden the censorious judgment of verse 1, the two commands standing together rather than in tension.

Matthew 7:16-18

Fruits name a life's actual produce, character and conduct over time, rather than a single act or a claimed gift, and the test is meant to be reliable, grapes of thorns and figs of thistles being simply impossible in nature. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit states the principle as a settled law rather than a rare exception, the fruit following necessarily from the nature of the tree that bears it. The commentators read the teaching as addressed to discerning others' claims to authority, false prophets specifically, rather than as a full statement on assurance of one's own standing before God.

Matthew 7:19-20

Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire repeats language John the Baptist had already used of the axe laid to the root at 3:10, tying this warning back to his own preaching at the Gospel's opening. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them closes the paragraph exactly as verse 16 opened it, an inclusio marking fruit-testing as the whole unit's single point. The fire pictures a real and final judgment on false teaching left unrepented, not merely a loss of usefulness in this life.

Matthew 7:21

Saying Lord, Lord is not itself condemned, since the title rightly confesses Jesus' authority, but saying it is shown insufficient without doing the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same standard of doing, not only hearing or saying, that closes the Sermon in the builders' parable. The verse anticipates the still harder case of verses 22 and 23, where the claim includes visible spiritual activity and still falls short. Entering the kingdom of heaven is here made to depend on a relationship proved by obedience rather than on a title correctly spoken.

Matthew 7:22-23

In that day names the day of judgment, and the claims made are impressive by any ordinary measure, prophesying, casting out devils, and many wonderful works, all done in thy name, that is, invoking Jesus' authority rather than another's. I never knew you is the verdict, and the commentators read it as the chapter's sharpest warning, that spiritual gifting and even real supernatural activity can occur without personal relationship, the same point Paul makes about gifts without love in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. Ye that work iniquity, echoing Psalm 6:8, names the true character beneath the impressive claims, workers of lawlessness rather than doers of the Father's will named in verse 21.

Matthew 7:24-25

The wise man is defined by two actions together, heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, hearing alone building nothing without the practice that follows. A rock foundation in that region meant digging down to bedrock before building, extra labor invisible until the storm exposed which house had done it. Rain, floods, and wind name the same trial that comes to both houses alike, the difference lying entirely in what lay beneath the visible structure, an image the whole Sermon's ethic has been building toward from its first beatitude.

Matthew 7:26-27

The foolish man hears the same sayings as the wise man and builds a house that may look identical above ground, the difference again invisible until the same storm tries both. Sand describes the dry Judean wadi beds, tempting level ground to build on in fair weather and lethal ground the moment the seasonal floods return. Great was the fall of it closes the parable with the total collapse of a life built on hearing without doing, the two builders standing as the last and starkest illustration in a Sermon that has warned against hearing without practice since its opening beatitudes.

Matthew 7:28-29

This formula, when Jesus had ended these sayings, closes the first of the Sermon's five great discourses and recurs with small variation at 11:1, 13:53, 19:1, and 26:1, each time marking the same shift from teaching back into narrative. The people were astonished at his doctrine because he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes, whose own teaching leaned on citing prior rabbis rather than speaking in their own voice. Jesus speaks in his own name throughout the Sermon, verily I say unto you repeated again and again, a manner of teaching the crowd recognized as unlike anything scribal instruction offered.
