Mark 8:1-3

The multitude being very great sets the second feeding apart from the five thousand of chapter six, and Mark notes plainly what moves Jesus: I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat. The bench reads the three days as itself a witness to the crowd's hunger for the word, that they had stayed with no bread rather than leave his teaching. Jesus raises the practical danger himself, they will faint by the way, since divers of them had come from far, before any disciple names the problem.

Mark 8:4-9

From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness, the disciples ask, having apparently forgotten the five thousand fed only a chapter before, and the bench reads the question as Mark's own honest measure of how little the first miracle had taught them. Jesus asks how many loaves they have, takes the seven, gives thanks, and has the disciples distribute them exactly as at the earlier feeding, blessing what is given rather than multiplying from nothing before their eyes. Four thousand eat and are filled, and seven baskets of fragments remain, a second sign of abundance offered to a crowd Mark does not identify by nationality, though the region east of the sea suggests Gentiles are present this time.

Mark 8:10-13

The parts of Dalmanutha receive Jesus for only as long as it takes the Pharisees to arrive tempting him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, a demand the bench reads as bad faith since he had already given more signs than the nation could account for. He sighed deeply in his spirit, Mark's own window into the Lord's grief, and answers that there shall no sign be given unto this generation, the only recorded outright refusal of a sign in the Gospels. He then leaves them exactly as he found them, entering the ship again for the other side, the abruptness itself a comment on the encounter.

Mark 8:14-21

had forgotten to take bread: Had forgotten to take bread sets up the disciples' one preoccupation just as Jesus warns them, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod, a figure of corrupting influence the disciples immediately mistake for a comment on their own lack of provisions. Jesus presses the failure hard, perceive ye not yet, neither understand, have ye your heart yet hardened, language Mark has already used of them at 6:52 after the first feeding. He walks them back through both miracles by the numbers, twelve baskets after five thousand and seven after four thousand, and the unanswered question, how is it that ye do not understand, closes the scene where the bread and blindness pattern the book has been building comes to its point before the healing that follows.

Mark 8:22-23

They bring a blind man unto him at Bethsaida and beseech Jesus only to touch him, and what follows is the one miracle in the Gospels worked in two stages rather than one. Jesus takes the man by the hand and leads him out of the town before doing anything, away from the crowd's expectation of an instant sign, and only then spits on his eyes and lays on hands. The bench notes the town itself had already seen mighty works and remained unbelieving, so the private leading out of Bethsaida may answer the town's own hardness as much as the man's blindness.

Mark 8:24-26

I see men as trees, walking is the honest report of a healing still in progress, sight returned but not yet resolved, and the bench reads Mark's placement of this alone-recorded gradual miracle directly before Peter's own half-formed confession as the chapter's own argument rather than an accident of order. Jesus lays hands on his eyes a second time and he is restored, and saw every man clearly, the completion following the same two touches the disciples themselves will need before they see the crucified Christ plainly. He is sent home with the same messianic-secret caution given elsewhere, neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

Mark 8:27-28

Whom do men say that I am, Jesus asks on the way to the towns of Cesarea Philippi, well outside Galilee and Herod's territory, and the answers the disciples report, John the Baptist, Elias, one of the prophets, show a nation that had sensed something prophetic in him without reaching the confession the next question will draw out. The bench notes the setting itself, a region thick with pagan shrines and Caesar's own claimed divinity, as the deliberately chosen ground for the question that turns the book.

Mark 8:29

Thou art the Christ is Peter's answer and the hinge the whole book turns on, chapters one through eight having asked who Jesus is and the chapters after asking what kind of Christ he will be. Mark gives the confession in four words where Matthew records Peter's fuller declaration and the Lord's blessing on him, and the bench reads Mark's compression as consistent with a Gospel that moves at speed and lets the deed answer for the man rather than lingering on commendation.

Mark 8:30

He charged them that they should tell no man of him is the fourth of the explicit silence commands in Mark, and the bench reads it under the messianic secret the book has kept since chapter one: a confession this true, spoken this early, could only be heard by the crowd as a call to arms against Rome. The older pastoral reading holds the silence as timing, the truth is not yet safe to preach until the cross has defined what kind of Christ he is, while the literary reading associated with Wrede treats the secret as Mark's own theological device rather than a historical restriction Jesus actually imposed; both are named here without a verdict.

Mark 8:31-33

must suffer many things: Must suffer many things opens the first of the three passion predictions the book turns on, each followed by a disciple failure and each answered by servant teaching, and here the failure comes at once: Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. Get thee behind me, Satan is the sharpest rebuke Jesus gives any disciple in the Gospels, and the bench reads it as aimed past Peter at the same temptation to a cross-less messiahship Satan had offered in the wilderness, for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. The turn from you are the Christ to you are Satan inside four verses is Mark's own comment on how little the confession had yet been understood.

Mark 8:34-37

take up his cross, and follow me: Take up his cross, and follow me is spoken to the multitude and the disciples together, widening the demand from the twelve to whoever will come after him, and the bench reads the cross here as the literal instrument of Roman execution rather than a figure for hardship in general, understood as such by everyone in Mark's first audience. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it states the paradox the whole call rests on, and what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul presses the same trade in the largest terms available. The soul's worth is stated as beyond any exchange a man could offer for it, or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul, closing the argument without an answer because none exists.

Mark 8:38

Ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation names the world Jesus addresses as unfaithful in the Old Testament's own marital sense, and the bench reads the warning as reciprocal, whoever is ashamed of him now will meet the same disowning when the Son of man comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. This is Mark's first plain statement of a future coming distinct from the resurrection just predicted, tying the chapter's cross-call to an eschatology the book will develop fully at chapter thirteen. The verse closes the hinge chapter where it began, the identity question of verse twenty-seven answered now not only in who Jesus is but in what allegiance to him will cost and where it leads.
