Isaiah 14:1-3

will have mercy on Jacob: Will have mercy on Jacob opens the promise on the far side of the taunt-song that follows, restoration named for Israel by its own name rather than transferred to another people, the referent the text itself fixes. The strangers who join themselves to the house of Jacob describe proselytes drawn into Israel's household, and the reversal named in verse 2, Israel ruling over the very nations that had ruled over her, answers the exile's humiliation point for point. The mercy promised here is bound to a real land and a real people before the taunt against Babylon's king even begins.

Isaiah 14:4-8

this proverb against the king of Babylon: This proverb against the king of Babylon names the taunt-song's target plainly, the Hebrew mashal a form of mocking poetry taken up once an oppressor falls. The whole earth breaking into singing pictures relief on a global scale, and the fir trees and cedars of Lebanon personified as rejoicing because no feller comes against them anymore point to a real economic burden: Babylon's building projects consumed Lebanon's timber for palaces and siege engines, and the forests themselves are pictured breathing easier. The taunt's opening line sets its tone before a single specific charge is laid against the king.

Isaiah 14:9-11

Hell from beneath is moved: Hell from beneath is moved personifies Sheol itself rousing the dead kings of the earth from their thrones to greet the fallen tyrant, a scene of mockery rather than honor. Their question, art thou also become weak as we, art thou become like unto us, is welcome turned into insult, the great king discovering in death that he is no different from any other corpse. The worm spread under him and the worms covering him replace the viols and pomp of his court, the same reversal the Hebrew poets use elsewhere for the end of every merely human glory.

Isaiah 14:12-15

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer: Isaiah names the king of Babylon as the taunt's target at 14:4, and Calvin and other older commentators hold the whole song addresses that king alone, its five I-wills read as royal boasting native to Babylonian court speech. Other writers going back to the church fathers, Jerome among them, hear in the king's reach past every earthly limit, I will ascend into heaven, I will be like the most High, language too vast for any mortal throne, and read behind the human king the fall of the power that moved him, drawing the line to Luke 10:18's I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven and to Ezekiel 28's oracle over the king of Tyre standing near it in the prophets. Lucifer at verse 12 is the sole occurrence of the name in Scripture, the Latin Vulgate's rendering of the Hebrew helel, shining one or day star, and which reading a reader takes shapes how far the taunt is heard to travel. Both positions are held by real names in the church's history, and the text itself does not settle which king is finally in view.

Isaiah 14:16-19

made the earth to tremble: Made the earth to tremble is the question onlookers ask in disbelief over the fallen king's corpse, the same man who did shake kingdoms and made the world a wilderness now brought low enough to be stared at and considered. Unlike other kings, who lie in glory each in his own tomb, this king is cast out of his own grave like a rejected branch, denied even the burial his rank would ordinarily guarantee. Ancient Near Eastern culture held a king's burial as a matter of dynastic honor, and the text's point is that this king is refused precisely what every other king in the passage receives.

Isaiah 14:20-23

the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned: The seed of evildoers shall never be renowned closes the reason for the king's denied burial, his own bloodline named alongside him in the sentence. The slaughter prepared for his children carries the iniquity of the fathers onto the next generation, and verse 22's cutting off of name, remnant, son and nephew describes the total end of a royal line rather than a single man's death. Babylon reduced to a possession for the bittern and swept with the besom of destruction returns to the same picture of total desolation the chapter before it already painted.

Isaiah 14:24-27

as I have purposed, so shall it stand: As I have purposed, so shall it stand is sworn by the Lord of hosts over a second target inside the same chapter, the Assyrian, still the visible imperial threat of Isaiah's own lifetime while Babylon had not yet risen to eclipse it. The oracle against Babylon and the oracle against Assyria sit side by side under one purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth, the hand stretched out over all the nations rather than one empire alone. The chronological reach matters: an oracle naming Assyria's future breaking was spoken while Assyria still stood, well before Babylon replaced it as the greater danger.

Isaiah 14:28-32

the year that king Ahaz died was this burden: The year that king Ahaz died was this burden dates the Philistia oracle plainly, closing the chapter with a shorter burden after the long taunt against Babylon. Philistia is warned not to rejoice that the rod which struck her is broken, because a worse threat follows from the same root, the serpent's root bringing forth a cockatrice and a fiery flying serpent, imagery of an escalating danger rather than relief. Zion's poor are promised safety in the same breath that Philistia is warned of smoke coming from the north, the chapter closing where it began, with Israel's remnant secure while the surrounding nations face judgment in turn.
