2 Corinthians 11:1-2

Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me: Paul opens the boast he is about to make by naming it in advance as folly, aphrosyne, foolishness, and the bench reads the whole of chapters 11 and 12 under this heading, an ironic boast Paul only undertakes because the church's own admiration for self-commending rivals has left him no other way to be heard. For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ: the boasting is framed as a father's jealousy for a daughter's betrothal, zelos theou, God's own jealousy, and the commentators note that everything harsh in the chapter that follows sits inside this pastoral motive, not personal vanity.

2 Corinthians 11:3-4

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ: Paul names the danger directly, Genesis 3's deception applied to Corinth's present situation, and the bench reads haplotes, simplicity, as singleness of devotion rather than mere naivety, a bride's undivided loyalty being drawn away by a smoother speaker. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him: the triple another names the actual danger as doctrinal substitution, not mere personal rivalry, and the commentators note that Paul's alarm is theological before it is personal, a different Christ preached under the same name.

2 Corinthians 11:5-6

For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles: the phrase, ton hyperlian apostolon, the super-apostles, is ironic, and the bench divides over whether it names the original Twelve or the false teachers' own inflated title for themselves, with most modern commentators favoring the latter since Paul nowhere else speaks so slightingly of Peter, James, or John. But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things: he concedes the charge of unpolished rhetoric already quoted at 10:10 while denying any deficiency in the substance of what he taught, a distinction the commentators read as decisive against judging ministry by delivery alone.

2 Corinthians 11:7-9

Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? Paul refused support from Corinth specifically, and the bench reads verse 7's irony as pointed, his rivals apparently charged fees while he, offering the gospel free, is somehow the one accused of wrongdoing. I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service: and when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: the picture is of Macedonian gifts covering Paul's needs at Corinth so that Corinth itself owed him nothing, and the commentators note that Philippians 4:15-16 confirms this exact arrangement, and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself, a policy he intends to hold regardless of what it costs him in reputation.

2 Corinthians 11:10-12

As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia; Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth: Paul swears by Christ's own truth that the policy of refusing support will continue, and the double question heads off before it can take root the obvious misreading of refusal as coldness. But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we: the false apostles apparently boasted of ministering on the same terms as Paul, and by refusing pay he denies them the ability to claim equal footing on that specific point.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15

deceitful workers: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ: Paul drops the irony entirely and names the rivals plainly, pseudapostoloi, a term used only here in the New Testament, workers whose deception is deliberate and whose disguise is the very apostleship of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light: the site's teaching on the unseen spiritual world receives the statement at face value, an actual spiritual reality behind the human deception rather than a mere figure of speech, and the bench reads the logic as escalating, if the source of the deception can appear as light, his human agents appearing as righteous ministers is no surprise at all. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works: judgment is promised on the deed rather than the disguise, and the commentators note the sober warning this leaves standing over any ministry that trades in a borrowed appearance of holiness.

2 Corinthians 11:16-18

I say again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little: Paul restates the frame of verse 1 as he moves into the boast's actual content, and the bench reads the repetition as necessary since what follows will sound, on its surface, exactly like the self-commendation he condemned at 10:12. That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting: he distances even the coming boast from ordinary apostolic speech, marking it as a concession to Corinth's own taste rather than his normal mode. Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also: the commentators note the deliberate irony, Paul will fight fire with fire only long enough to expose what the fire actually is.

2 Corinthians 11:19-21

For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise: the irony sharpens into open sarcasm, Corinth's self-regarded wisdom mocked for its actual gullibility toward men who exploit them. For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face: the bench reads the list as a catalogue of the false apostles' actual conduct at Corinth, financial exploitation, personal domination, even physical insult, tolerated by a church too impressed by appearances to object. I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, I speak foolishly, I am bold also: Paul concedes the earlier charge of weakness one more time before turning it, using the very accusation as the doorway into the boast that follows.

2 Corinthians 11:22-23

Are they Hebrews: Paul matches the false apostles' claims of Hebrew, Israelite, and Abrahamic descent point for point, the bench reading the triad as rising in specificity, language and nationality, then covenant membership, then physical descent from the patriarch, none of which his rivals could claim over him. Are they ministers of Christ? I speak as a fool: at the one place credentials might actually matter, apostolic service itself, Paul claims not equality but excess, in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft, and immediately begins the catalogue that will prove the claim rather than merely asserting it.

2 Corinthians 11:24-25

Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one: the synagogue discipline of Deuteronomy 25:3 capped at forty lashes, and Jewish practice stopped at thirty-nine to guard against miscounting, five separate beatings nowhere else recorded in Acts, and the bench notes that Paul submitted to synagogue discipline five times rather than simply walking away from the Jewish community that inflicted it. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep: Roman rod-beatings, the stoning at Lystra recorded in Acts 14:19, and shipwrecks unrecorded anywhere in Acts before this letter, all confirming that Luke's narrative is selective and Paul's actual sufferings ran well beyond what any single source preserves.

2 Corinthians 11:26-27

Constant travel opens a list of nine perils, of waters, of robbers, by his own countrymen, by the heathen, in the city, in the wilderness, in the sea, and among false brethren: the bench notes the final one lands hardest, perils among false brethren placed last and given no qualifier, the wound of betrayal from within the church ranked with shipwreck and robbery. In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness: the list turns from external threat to ongoing physical deprivation, and the commentators read the accumulation as Paul's deliberate answer to a ministry measured by rhetoric, his own credentials written on his body rather than in his delivery.

2 Corinthians 11:28-29

Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches: after the catalogue of physical suffering Paul names a burden the bench reads as heavier still, the daily pastoral weight of every congregation he had planted, epistasis, pressure or care, carried without relief. Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? he identifies so completely with every struggling believer's weakness and every scandalized conscience that their condition becomes his own, and the commentators note this verse as the emotional center of the whole catalogue, credentials that end not in triumph but in shared suffering.

2 Corinthians 11:30-31

If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities: the boast Paul promised at verse 1 arrives at its true content, not achievements but weaknesses, and the bench reads the statement as the hinge preparing the thorn passage of chapter 12, a theology of glorying in infirmity rather than accomplishment. The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not: he seals the catalogue with an oath invoking God as witness, and the commentators note the solemnity as proportionate to how easily such a list could be doubted or dismissed as exaggeration by a church that had never seen most of it.

2 Corinthians 11:32-33

In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me: the chapter closes with a single dated incident, Acts 9:23-25's escape from Damascus, Aretas IV of Nabatea controlling the city in the years around Paul's conversion, giving historians one of the few fixed points for reconstructing his early chronology. And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands: the bench notes the deliberate anticlimax, the catalogue of the world's mightiest sufferings ends on a note of undignified rescue, lowered in a basket like cargo, and reads the placement as Paul's own final irony, his boasting ending not in glory but in the picture of a man saved by being let down a wall in the dark.
