2 Chronicles 25:1-2

Amaziah's formula matches Kings almost word for word, but Chronicles trades the comparison to David and Joash for a different measure, not with a perfect heart. The phrase reads forward into the chapter rather than backward into his father's record, since the divided heart named here is exactly what breaks out at verse 14 when Amaziah brings home the gods of Seir. Jehoaddan of Jerusalem, his mother, is named in both accounts and nowhere else in Scripture.

2 Chronicles 25:3-4

Amaziah executes his father's murderers but spares their children, and Chronicles keeps the citation Kings already carries, the fathers shall not die for the children, out of the book of Moses. The parallel exposition at 2 Kings 14:5-6 already carries the citation's weight; here the same clause confirms Chronicles is working from a shared source rather than a new legal ground. A king who honors that rule in verse 4 is the same king who, ten verses later, bows before another nation's gods.

2 Chronicles 25:5-6

The muster and the hire belong to Chronicles alone; Kings never mentions the three hundred thousand of Judah or the hundred thousand Israelites bought for a hundred talents of silver. Amaziah's own army is a fourth the size Jehoshaphat once fielded, a shrinkage the numbers themselves record, and his answer to the shortfall is money rather than prayer. Hiring Ephraim for silver is the same alliance with the north that Chronicles keeps flagging as a fault line in Judah's kings.

2 Chronicles 25:7-8

The man of God who confronts Amaziah before the campaign even begins has no counterpart in Kings; the whole episode from verse 7 through verse 10 is Chronicles' own addition. His charge is not moral but positional, the Lord is not with Israel, because Ephraim's worship at the calves has cut it off from the Lord's presence regardless of its numbers. Fellowship with an unfaithful ally is treated as a spiritual liability before it is treated as a military one.

2 Chronicles 25:9

Amaziah's objection is practical, the hundred talents already paid to Ephraim, and the prophet's answer becomes the chapter's proverb, the Lord is able to give thee much more than this. The promise never specifies how the loss will be made good, only that it will, and it asks Amaziah to trust a future gain he cannot yet see over a present loss he can count. He obeys this word and loses the money; the rest of the chapter shows what he does when a harder word costs him something dearer.

2 Chronicles 25:10

Amaziah sends the hired men home, and Ephraim's anger at the dismissal is the seed of verse 13's raid on Judah's own cities. Chronicles lets a single obedient decision carry a cost that falls later, on towns between Samaria and Beth-horon that Amaziah's army was not there to defend. Right choices in this book are not shown to be free of consequence, only right.

2 Chronicles 25:11-12

Kings records the ten thousand slain in the valley of salt and the taking of Selah in a single clause; Chronicles adds a second ten thousand, taken alive and thrown from the top of the rock. The added detail belongs to Chronicles alone, and the commentators do not soften it, reading it as retaliation or as calculated terror against a people already broken. A victory this costly to the losers sets up the irony of verse 14 more sharply than the Kings account by itself would.

2 Chronicles 25:13

The raid on Judah's own cities has no parallel in Kings at all; the whole verse is material only Chronicles preserves. The dismissed Ephraimites, still angry from verse 10, strike the towns between Samaria and Beth-horon and carry off spoil while Amaziah is away fighting Edom, proof that the man of God's warning in verse 7 named a real danger and not a scruple. Obedience to the prophet cost Amaziah nothing here that his own countrymen did not make him pay anyway.

2 Chronicles 25:14

Amaziah comes home from Edom and sets up the gods of Seir, bowing down and burning incense to them, and Chronicles states the irony plainly: these are the gods of a people he has just defeated. Kings never records this episode; the idolatry and everything that follows from it belongs to Chronicles alone. The God who answered his one prayer for silver at verse 9 is exchanged, within the same chapter, for gods that could not save their own worshippers.

2 Chronicles 25:15-16

The prophet's question in verse 15 states the chapter's whole argument as a question, why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand. Amaziah answers not with repentance but with a threat, forbear, why shouldest thou be smitten, and the prophet obeys and stops speaking, but not before pronouncing the verdict, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee. Silencing a true prophet does not silence the word already spoken; the narrator points back to this verse when the fulfillment comes at verse 27.

2 Chronicles 25:17-19

Amaziah's challenge to Joash of Israel and Joash's answering fable of the thistle and the cedar run close to 2 Kings 14:8-9, already built there, and Chronicles adds no new wording to the parable itself. What Chronicles changes is placement: in Kings the challenge follows straight on the Edom victory, flushed pride after a battle won, while here it follows the idol worship and the prophet's silenced warning, so the same swagger reads as spiritual defiance rather than only military overconfidence. Joash's counsel, abide now at home, is the second warning Amaziah refuses in one chapter.

2 Chronicles 25:20

Verse 20 has no counterpart in Kings: Chronicles alone states that Amaziah's refusal to listen came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom. The clause ties the coming defeat directly back to verse 14's idolatry rather than leaving it a matter of bad diplomacy or military miscalculation. God's determination announced at verse 16 and this verse's of God together frame the whole disaster as the sentence already passed being carried out.

2 Chronicles 25:21-24

The defeat at Beth-shemesh, the broken wall and the plundered temple parallel 2 Kings 14:11-14 in close detail, already carried in full there. Chronicles adds one note of its own, that the temple vessels taken were with Obed-edom, the family David had set as gatekeepers over the ark generations earlier, tying the temple's own guardians into a chapter about a king who stopped guarding his own worship. Judah breaks before Israel exactly as the prophet's silenced word had already said it would.

2 Chronicles 25:25-26

The regnal notice, fifteen years lived after Joash's death and a pointer to the book of the kings of Judah and Israel, matches Kings' formula closely, and the Chronicler cites the same shared source rather than adding new material here. The long postscript years are commonly read as a slow decline rather than a recovery, the humiliation at Jerusalem never undone in the record that follows.

2 Chronicles 25:27-28

The conspiracy, the flight to Lachish and the killing there parallel 2 Kings 14:19-20, already built in full at that chapter. Chronicles frames the death with its own hinge phrase, after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord, naming the turn from the Lord as the reason a king who reigned twenty nine years still died by conspiracy. The body brought home on horses for burial with his fathers closes a life the prophet had already summed up at verse 16.
