The regnal notice, fifteen years lived after Joash's death and a pointer to the book of the kings of Judah and Israel, matches Kings' formula. The postscript years are commonly read as a slow decline rather than a recovery, the humiliation at Jerusalem never undone in the record that follows.

The Targum, cited by Adam Clarke, reads from beginning to end as the two halves of this reign. The first half was lived in the fear of the LORD, and the last half was lived after he turned away. Verse 27 dates the plot against him from that turn.
