Come, let us meet face to face

on 2 Chronicles 25:17-19

Amaziah’s challenge and Jehoash’s fable of the thistle and the cedar follow 2 Kings 14:8-9 closely. In Kings the challenge follows straight on the Edom victory, while here it follows the idol worship and the silenced prophet. Jehoash’s counsel, “Now stay at home,” is the second warning Amaziah refuses.

Jehoash names the fault in one line: a single win over Edom has puffed up the king. The same pride fells his son Uzziah at 26:16. Matthew Henry applies Proverbs 25:8 to Amaziah, that a man quick to quarrel ends in shame.
