1 Chronicles 12:1-2

These are Saul's own kinsmen, Benjamite archers skilled with either hand, who threw in with David while Saul still reigned and David still hid at Ziklag. No account in Samuel names this company; the whole chapter is material Chronicles alone preserves, four separate musters building toward the coronation at Hebron. The label helpers of the war marks trained fighters rather than raw sympathizers, men whose bow-skill Saul's own tribe had first supplied.

1 Chronicles 12:3-7

Seven names open the roster proper: Ahiezer and Joash from Gibeah, Saul's own city; Jeziel and Pelet, sons of Azmaveth; Berachah and Jehu of Anathoth, the town that will later give Judah the prophet Jeremiah. The name Jeremiah itself recurs three times across this chapter's lists, at verse four, verse ten and verse thirteen, and Chronicles distinguishes each man by city or by rank rather than by lineage. A chapter built almost entirely of names still tells a reader something plain: these defectors came from towns loyal to Saul's own house, and left it anyway.

1 Chronicles 12:8-9

whose faces were like the faces of lions: The Gadites are described rather than merely named: whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were as swift as the roes upon the mountains, the poetic parallelism marking older material folded into the roster. Adam Clarke notes that swiftness ranked among the prized qualities of any ancient warrior, alongside the shield and buckler these men already carried. Spurgeon preached this company as a picture of the volunteers a greater David still gathers, men who join him in his rejection rather than in his glory.

1 Chronicles 12:10-14

Mishmannah the fourth: The eleven Gadite captains are ranked in order, Mishmannah fourth through Machbanai eleventh, and verse fourteen states the scale of their command: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the line as a hyperbole for personal valor, each man reckoned worth many ordinary soldiers rather than commanding armies of that size. Barnes notes the passage's older, more poetic style, arguing it was drawn from an early source rather than written fresh by the Chronicler.

1 Chronicles 12:15

The crossing itself is a feat worth its own verse: Jordan at flood stage, in the first month when the winter thaw fills the valley, and this company crossed it anyway to put to flight the valley dwellers on both banks. Matthew Henry reads the exploit as the mark of men fit to be employed in God's cause, men who venture on a plain trust in his protection. No parallel account exists in Samuel; this river-crossing belongs to Chronicles alone.

1 Chronicles 12:16-17

Benjamin and Judah add their own numbers next, and David meets this company with a conditional welcome rather than an open one: if ye be come peaceably, mine heart shall be knit unto you, but if to betray me, the God of our fathers look thereon and rebuke it. Wesley reads the appeal to the God of our fathers as David resting his case with the covenant God, judge to all the earth, rather than judging the matter himself. Spurgeon preached this scene as a king testing his recruits before trusting them with his cause, a caution his own church could still learn from.

1 Chronicles 12:18

The Spirit came upon Amasai, and what follows reads as oracle rather than ordinary speech: Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse; peace, peace be unto thee. Wesley reads the same formula that moved Israel's judges in the book of Judges as moving a captain here, the Spirit stirring more than saving grace, a courage the man did not raise in himself. Matthew Henry takes the oracle's threefold pledge, being his, standing on his side, and being hearty for his interest, as the pattern every follower of David's greater son still owes him. David answers at once, receiving the company and making them captains of the band.

1 Chronicles 12:19-21

Some of Manasseh joined David during the Philistine campaign against Saul at Gilboa, a scene 1 Samuel 29 already tells from the Philistine lords' own suspicion of David and his dismissal from their ranks. Chronicles adds what Samuel does not: the captains' names, and the notice that these same men helped David against the band of the rovers, the Amalekites who had burned Ziklag while he marched with the Philistines. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown tie the notice directly to 1 Samuel 30's raid, reading these Manassite captains as reinforcements David gained just in time for that pursuit.

1 Chronicles 12:22

The narrator pauses to summarize before the tribal numbers begin: day by day men came until it was a great host, like the host of God. Gill records the Targum's reading of that comparison as the heavenly host, the angels themselves, a scale meant to describe overwhelming number rather than to claim a supernatural army. Wesley reads it the same way, the host of God standing for what is beyond counting, like the stars.

1 Chronicles 12:23-27

The second list begins at Hebron itself, numbering the tribes that came to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord, a phrase that frames this whole muster as the fulfillment of a promise rather than a coup. Judah supplies six thousand eight hundred and Levi four thousand six hundred, with the house of Aaron under Jehoiada numbering three thousand seven hundred more. Clarke identifies this Jehoiada as father of Benaiah rather than the sitting high priest Abiathar, a distinct man raising a distinct company; the priestly tribe stands armed here in a coronation muster where Numbers would ordinarily exempt it from a military census.

1 Chronicles 12:28-29

Zadok appears here for the first time in the chapter's rosters, a young man mighty of valour with twenty-two captains from his father's house, the same priest who will anoint Solomon king in 1 Chronicles 29 and 1 Kings 1. Benjamin's contribution is smaller by contrast, three thousand men only, for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul. Barnes and Jamieson, Fausset and Brown both read the small Benjamite number as proof that Saul's own tribe was still hoping, even this late, to keep the crown inside his family.

1 Chronicles 12:30-31

Ephraim sends twenty thousand eight hundred, famous throughout the house of their fathers, and the half tribe of Manasseh sends eighteen thousand more, men expressed by name for the specific purpose of making David king. Keil reads the naming of individuals within so large a number as evidence the Chronicler drew on an actual muster record rather than a round estimate. Bennett notes that these two tribes, both descended from Joseph, appear in this list without any of the old rivalry with Judah that later divides the kingdom under Solomon's son.

1 Chronicles 12:32

The children of Issachar are the only tribe in the list credited with insight rather than numbers: men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, only two hundred heads commanding a tribe that trusted their judgment enough to be at their commandment. Adam Clarke records the Targum's expansion of the phrase into astronomers who fixed the calendar's months and seasons, a later gloss rather than the text's own claim. Matthew Henry reads the verse more plainly, as leaders wise enough to read their moment and a people wise enough to follow them, the pattern he says every good state still needs.

1 Chronicles 12:33-37

The remaining tribes are each marked by one distinguishing trait: Zebulun disciplined enough to keep rank and not of double heart, sending fifty thousand; Naphtali a thousand captains over thirty-seven thousand more; Dan and Asher expert in war; and the tribes across Jordan, Reuben, Gad and the other half of Manasseh, fielding a hundred and twenty thousand with every kind of weapon. Barnes reads this pattern as the Chronicler's method across the whole list, naming in each tribe the one thing it was most admired for rather than repeating the same praise everywhere. Wesley reads not of double heart at Zebulun as loyalty without pretense, men who did not publicly back David while secretly hoping for Saul's house to return.

1 Chronicles 12:38

The muster closes on unanimity: all these men of war came with a perfect heart to Hebron to make David king, and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king, the whole list of tribal numbers folding into one verdict. Gill reads the doubled heart language, perfect heart and one heart, as the record's own way of saying the choice was neither divided nor half-hearted anywhere in the nation. Keil notes this verse as the hinge the entire chapter has been building toward across four separate musters, from Ziklag's exiles to Hebron's tribes.

1 Chronicles 12:39-40

eating and drinking: Three days of eating and drinking follow at Hebron, provision brought on asses, camels, mules and oxen from Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali alone, because their brethren had prepared for them: a coronation kept as a feast rather than a ceremony. Matthew Henry reads the feast itself as the fruit of the moment, a noble entertainment made for an occasion Israel could not help but celebrate, for there was joy in Israel. Adam Clarke reads the three days as deputies rather than the full numbered host, since so vast a company could not literally have feasted together that long, and the nearest tribes carried the greater share of supplying it.
