Joppa
Summary
The coastal town where Tabitha was raised and where Peter, praying on a rooftop, saw the sheet lowered three times that sent him to Cornelius.
- Joppa is the coastal port Israel's story keeps sending people through: cedar logs, a fleeing prophet, and an apostle called east all pass through the same harbor.
- Peter raised Tabitha from death in an upper room here, and many in Joppa believed because of it.
- Staying in the house of Simon the tanner, a trade custom treated as unclean, Peter saw a sheet let down from heaven three times and was told not to call anything impure that God had made clean.
- That vision is what sent Peter to the Gentile centurion Cornelius, and it is why the Holy Spirit fell on Gentiles for the first time in Acts.
- Jonah went down to Joppa to find a ship away from his mission, not toward it.

Common questions
Why was Peter staying with a tanner?
Why does the sheet come down three times?
Acts 10:16 says the vision repeated three times before the sheet was taken back up. Scripture does not explain the number beyond that repetition, so this page states only what the text says.
Is Joppa the same as modern Jaffa?
Yes, the same name carried forward into the present day. This page notes the modern name only for identification and does not address any present-day city or state affairs.
Why did Jonah go to Joppa instead of somewhere else?
Joppa was the working port nearest Israel's own territory with ships bound west, which is why Jonah went down to Joppa specifically to find passage away from his mission to Nineveh in the east.
What happened to Tabitha after she was raised?
Scripture records only that she was presented alive to the saints and widows and that many in Joppa believed because of it. Nothing further about her life afterward is recorded.
