6 notes on this verseThe tribe of Ephraim - forty thousand and five hundred - Ephraim, as he was blessed beyond his eldest brother Manasseh, Gen 48:20, so here he is increased by thousands more than Manasseh, and more than the whole tribe of Benjamin, and his blessing continued above his brother, Deu 33:17. And thus the prophecy, Gen 48:19, was fulfilled: His younger brother (Ephraim) shall be greater than he, (Manasseh).

Joseph is counted as two tribes, and Ephraim at 40,500 stands above Manasseh at 32,200. Jacob had crossed his hands at Genesis 48:14-20 and said “his younger brother shall be greater than he”. The roll reads that way generations later.

John Wesley sets Ephraim's lead of over 8,000 above Manasseh beside the loss of 1 Chronicles 7:21-22. There men of Gath killed Ephraim's sons and their father mourned many days. By Numbers 26:37 Ephraim has fallen to 32,500.

proposed
Of the two half-tribes of Joseph, who is seen to be "a fruitful bough" [Ge 49:22], that of Ephraim was the larger, as had been predicted. The relative increase of all, as in the two just mentioned, was owing to the special blessing of God, conformably to the prophetic declaration of the dying patriarch.
