A peace offering eaten on the third day "is tainted and will not be accepted". The verses on theft and lying that follow name no penalty, while this one ends with the eater "cut off from his people".

John Gill notes the doubled Hebrew verb, which he takes to mean that even the least bit eaten on the third day brings the penalty. He reads tainted as treating the offering as common or corrupt flesh, as if it had never been a sacrifice.
