And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron,.... Which lay in the hill country, and therefore they are said to go up to it from Eglon, which lay lower; and, according to Bunting (g), it was sixteen miles from it: and they fought against it; it making some resistance at first, and did not surrender at once, as demanded. (g) Ibid. (Travels of the Patriarchs, &c. p. 96.)

went up from Eglon

on Joshua 10:36-37

Hebron is taken here, and it is given to Caleb to take again at 14:12 and 15:14, and Judah takes it a third time at Judges 1:10 with the same three Anakim named. Both accounts stand as they are written. Readers hold two ways of carrying them together: that this campaign broke the field armies and the towns were reoccupied behind Israel, since Joshua garrisons nothing, or that the later passages record the settling of ground this raid only swept. The city is Abraham's burial place at Genesis 23:2, where it is called Kirjath Arba.

In like manner, there is also Hebron, which they say means "union" or "marriage." But the union of our soul was at first with a wicked man and a most evil husband, the devil. When that one was destroyed and abolished, the soul was "freed from the law" of that former wicked man and united with a good and lawful one, him about whom the apostle Paul says, "I determined to present you a chaste virgin to one man, to Christ."18Thus even the understanding of the names themselves agrees with this twofold condition of every city.

Hebron - and the king thereof - See the note on Jos 10:3. From Jos 10:23 we learn that the king of Hebron was one of those five whom Joshua slew and hanged on five trees at Makkedah. How then can it be said that he slew the king of Hebron when he took the city, which was some days after the transactions at Makkedah?
