The people of Israel forsook the God of Israel, and gave that worship and honour to the dunghill deities of the Canaanites which was due to him alone.

One sentence carries the whole distance between Joshua 24 and the rest of this book: "another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel". The failure it names is ignorance. Deuteronomy 6:7 and Joshua 4:21 to 24 had both laid the remedy on the parents, and this verse reports what happened where it was not done.

During the lifetime of the first occupiers, who retained a vivid recollection of all the miracles and judgments which they had witnessed in Egypt and the desert, the national character stood high for faith and piety.
