5 notes on this verseYet so much sense they had of their obligations to him that they did him honour at his death, and buried him in Timnath-heres; so it is called here, not, as in Joshua, Timnath-serah. Heres signifies the sun, a representation of which, some think, was set upon his sepulchre, and gave name to it, in remembrance of the sun's standing still at his word.

on Judges 2:8-9
Joshua dies "at the age of 110", the age Genesis 50:26 gives for Joseph and for no other man in Scripture. Both men are buried in the same country. The title "the servant of the LORD" is one the book of Joshua gave only to Moses until its last chapter.

Matthew Henry notes that Joshua's burial place is called Timnath-heres here and Timnath-serah in the book of Joshua. Heres means the sun. Henry reports a view that an image of the sun marked the tomb, in memory of the sun standing still at Joshua's word.

It was inserted here to give the reader the reasons which called forth so strong and severe a rebuke from the angel of the Lord. During the lifetime of the first occupiers, who retained a vivid recollection of all the miracles and judgments which they had witnessed in Egypt and the desert, the national character stood high for faith and piety.
