Chapter summary
Abraham's second marriage to Keturah; his death at 175 and his burial beside Sarah by Isaac and Ishmael. The toledoth of Ishmael closes that line; the toledoth of Isaac opens the next: Rebekah's twins, the two nations struggling in the womb, ‘the elder shall serve the younger’. Esau is born red and hairy; Jacob comes holding the heel. The chapter ends with Esau's single sentence of theology — ‘behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall this birthright do to me?’ — and the bowl of red pottage. Hebrews 12:16 reads this moment as the profane trade that bars Esau from the promise.
