on Genesis 48:3-4
Before Jacob gives anything away, he recites what he was given. God Almighty is El Shaddai, the name under which the covenant was cut with Abraham at Genesis 17:1. Luz is the place of the stone and the stairway at Genesis 28:19 and the second appearing at Genesis 35:6. He quotes the everlasting possession of the land from a bed in Egypt.

God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz--The object of Jacob, in thus reverting to the memorable vision at Beth-el [Ge 28:10-15] --one of the great landmarks in his history--was to point out the splendid promises in reserve for his posterity--to engage Joseph's interest and preserve his continued connection with the people of God, rather than with the Egyptians.
