4 notes on this verseThese are the names of the children of Israel - It may be necessary to observe here, First, that several of these names are expressed differently elsewhere, Jemuel for Nemuel, Jachin for Jarib, Gershon for Gershom, etc.; compare Num 26:12; 1Ch 4:24. But it is no uncommon case for the same person to have different names, or the same name to be differently pronounced; See Clarke on Gen 25:18 (note).

The roll opens with Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, who loses the birthright in chapter 49 for what he did with his father's bed. Simeon and Levi stand next, the two who took Shechem, and the same blessing answers their anger. Exodus 1:1 repeats the line and counts from it.

In the speech of Stephen (Ac 7:14) the number is stated to be seventy-five; but as that estimate includes five sons of Ephraim and Manasseh (1Ch 7:14-20), born in Egypt, the two accounts coincide.
