How long - The reference to Exo 16:4 is obvious. The prohibition involved a trial of faith, in which as usual the people were found wanting. Every miracle formed some part, so to speak, of an educational process.

Some go out on the seventh day anyway and find nothing, so the question is settled by an empty field rather than by a penalty. God's reply names commandments and laws in the plural at a point before Sinai, and readers have long divided over what those were. Some take them as the instructions given in this chapter, others as commands known from the fathers, and the verse itself does not say.

Albert Barnes hears in How long a reference back to verse 4, where the LORD said the manna would test whether they would follow His instructions. He calls each miracle part of an education in faith. The rebuke is spoken to Moses in the plural.

Note, (1.) Disobedience, even in a small matter, is very provoking. (2.) God is jealous for the honour of his sabbaths. If walking out on the sabbath to seek for food was thus reproved, walking out on that day purely to find our own pleasure cannot be justified.

Though it may be exhaled by the heat and afterwards fall with the dew, it is a medicine, not food--it is well known to the natives of the desert, while the Israelites were strangers to theirs; and in taste as well as in the appearance of double quantity on Friday, none on Sabbath, and in not breeding worms, it is essentially different from the manna furnished to the Israelites.
