Or these were performed according to his order: he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts; not as a priest, but as a prince, as the common father of them, wishing them all happiness and prosperity outward and inward, praying to God to bless them with all blessings temporal and spiritual, who is the God of armies above and below, and can do what he pleases, and more than his people can ask or think.

The tabernacle David pitches for the ark in Zion is a new tent, not the tabernacle of Moses, which 1 Chronicles 16:39 and 21:29 still locate at Gibeon; for the rest of David's reign Israel's worship runs in two places until Solomon brings both together at the temple. David blesses the people in the name of the Lord of hosts, the same title given the ark back at verse 2, now spoken over the crowd that carried it home. Every person in Israel, women included, receives bread, a portion of meat and a cake of wine, a national meal that turns the ark's homecoming into a feast every household shares.

Clarke reads David's blessing as a priestly act, and Barnes notes that Solomon blessed the people the same way at 1 Kings 8:14. Gill reads David blessing the people as a king, the father of his people. Wesley hears it as a prayer for their good.

He blessed - That is, he heartily and solemnly prayed to God for his blessing upon them: which he did both as a prophet, and as their king, to whom by office it belongs, by all means, to seek his people's welfare.
And, when we consider that the ark was both the token of God's presence and a type of Christ, we shall see that this story is very instructive. 1 Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.
He testified his desire for their welfare by this prayer for them, and let them know they had a king that loved them. (2.) With a generous treat; for so it was, rather than a distribution of alms.
