The oracle Solomon builds within the house is a perfect cube, twenty cubits in length, breadth and height, overlaid inside with pure gold along with the altar of cedar standing before it. Commentators have long set that cube beside the New Jerusalem of Revelation 21:16, the only other cube given equal length, breadth and height in Scripture, reading the innermost room where God dwelt with Israel as a small pattern of where God will dwell with his people at the end. Between the cube and the outer walls the whole house is overlaid with gold, floor to ceiling, until Solomon had finished all the house.

The altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary stood outside it in the Holy Place, close to its doors, as John Wesley and John Gill place it. Gill reads the golden altar as an emblem of Christ's intercession in Revelation 8. Adam Clarke found the cost beyond reckoning.

The whole house he overlaid with gold - It is impossible to calculate this expense, or the quantity of gold employed in this sacred building.
The lavish use of the precious metals in ornamentation was a special feature if early Oriental architecture. Recent researches have given reason to believe that two stages of the great temple at Borsippa - now known as the Bits Nimrud - had respectively a gold and a silver coating.
