The word of the LORD sets a condition: “if you walk in My statutes, carry out My ordinances, and keep all My commandments”. The covenant of 2 Samuel 7 promised that David’s house would stand regardless. God’s dwelling among Israel in this house rests on obedience.

The promise to dwell among the Israelites was first given to Moses at Exodus 25:8 and 29:45, and Albert Barnes notes David never received it. The pledge to keep hold of His people Israel echoes Deuteronomy 31:6 and Joshua 1:5. Here it is tied to the temple.

The first promise to “dwell among” the Israelites had been made to Moses Exo 25:8; Exo 29:45, but had not been repeated to David. The next promise, “I will not forsake, etc.,” if not absolutely new, seems to have been more positive and general than previous similar promises Deu 31:6, Deu 31:8; Jos 1:5. God will not at any time or under any circumstances wholly forsake Israel.

It was very seasonable, being designed: first, to encourage him to go on with the building, by confirming anew the promise made to his father David (2Sa 7:12-16); and secondly, to warn him against the pride and presumption of supposing that after the erection of so magnificent a temple, he and his people would always be sure of the presence and favor of God.
