I cannot return with you
on 1 Kings 13:16-18
The man of God gives the old prophet the refusal he gave the king. The old prophet answers that “an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD”. The text tells the reader what the man of God is not told: “The old prophet was lying to him”.

But it was all a lie; it was a banter upon prophecy, and profane in the highest degree. When this old prophet is spoken of ( 2 Kings xxiii.

Into the city, and into his house in it, being such an idolatrous place, and especially being forbidden of God: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place; he was resolute and determined to abide by the commandment of the Lord, though there is reason to believe that he was now both hungry and thirsty.
