You must not eat bread or drink water
on 1 Kings 13:9-10
The charge has three parts. The text gives no reason for any of them: “You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came”. He eats nothing at Bethel and goes home by another road, and the rest of the chapter turns on this command.

The new road kept the charge of verse 9 to the letter. It also left a route that could be traced, and at verse 12 the old prophet asks his sons which way he went. The lion meets him on the road at verse 24.
