3 notes on this verseBut God sees not as man sees. It is plain it was wrong in David to do it, and a great provocation to God, because he did it in the pride of his heart; and there is no sin that has in it more of contradiction and therefore more of offence to God than pride. The sin was David's; he alone must bear the blame of it.

Chronicles adds that the LORD “answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering”. Fire also marked the tabernacle's first sacrifice in Leviticus 9:24 and the temple's dedication in 2 Chronicles 7:1. Then the LORD spoke, and the angel “put his sword back into its sheath”.

At the LORD's word the angel sheathes his sword, and the plague that began in verse 14 ends. The drawn sword of verse 16 is put away. Matthew Henry reads this as the controversy concluded and David's peace made with God upon his repentance.
