Chapter summary

The Noahic covenant. Humanity is renewed in its vocation — be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth — and given new terms: flesh for food, but not with its blood; and capital justice for the shedder of human blood, because man is in the image of God. The rainbow is set in the cloud as the sign: while the earth remains, it will not again be cut off by water. The chapter's dark coda is Noah's drunkenness and Ham's disrespect. Shem and Japheth cover their father; the curse falls on Canaan. Even the renewed world carries the old infection — the ark did not save Noah from himself.
