Gad, David’s seer

on 1 Chronicles 21:9-13

Chronicles names Gad's office, “David’s seer”, before the word arrives. The third option is spelled out, “three days of the sword of the LORD”, with “the angel of the LORD ravaging every part of Israel”. Albert Barnes notes that the angel is named here and nowhere in Samuel's version.

The LORD sends Gad with three options and will carry out the one David chooses. The choice is left to David. Adam Clarke, on verse 13, cites the Targum, where David weighs how Israel would judge him for choosing famine or war.
