Revelation 21:1-2

a new heaven and a new earth: John sees a new heaven and a new earth, the first heaven and earth having passed away, and there is no more sea, the same sea Daniel's four beasts rose from (Daniel 7:2-3) and the same sea John's own vision opened before the throne (4:6), now gone from the world that remains. The holy city descends prepared as a bride adorned for her husband, the wedding announced at 19:7 now made visible, and the bridal thread that began in Eden's first marriage reaches its city here. Whether the sea's ending is read as the literal ocean or as the last token of chaos and Gentile unrest, the sense both readings share stands: nothing hostile to God remains in the world he makes new.

Revelation 21:3-4

A great voice from heaven announces what Eden lost and Israel's tabernacle only pictured: the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, the same word used of God pitching his tent among Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 25:8) now fulfilled without a veil. God himself wipes away every tear, and death, sorrow, crying, and pain are named and ended one by one, Isaiah 25:8's promise realized at last. The former things are passed away because their cause, the curse of Genesis 3, is undone in the chapter that follows.

Revelation 21:5-6

I make all things new: The one seated on the throne speaks for the first time since the throne room vision of chapter 4, Behold, I make all things new, and commands John to write it down as true and faithful. He then names himself Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the same self naming Christ used at 1:8 and 1:17, and offers the fountain of the water of life freely to him that is athirst, the invitation the bride herself repeats at 22:17. Nothing is bought here; the gift John describes is the same free water Isaiah offered without money or price (Isaiah 55:1).

Revelation 21:7-8

He that overcometh reprises the promise made seven times to seven churches, and here it is gathered into one line, he shall inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he shall be my son, the covenant formula of 2 Samuel 7:14 given to every overcomer rather than to David's line alone. Against that inheritance stands a list of eight, the fearful and unbelieving named first, whose part is the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, the second death, the very phrase promised as no threat to the overcomer at 2:11. The fearful heading the list is deliberate: cowardice under pressure, not open unbelief only, forfeits the inheritance.

Revelation 21:9-10

One of the seven angels who carried a vial of the last plagues now carries the opposite errand, come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife, the same angel and the same formula that showed John the harlot Babylon at 17:1, the two cities set deliberately side by side. He carries John in the spirit to a great and high mountain, echoing Ezekiel's own mountain vision of the future temple (Ezekiel 40:2), and shows him the holy Jerusalem descending, the bride now revealed as a city rather than a single figure. What was shown as a woman in verse 2 is shown as a city here; the vision names one reality two ways.

Revelation 21:11

The city's first attribute named is not its measurements but having the glory of God, the kabod that once filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34) and departed the temple before its destruction (Ezekiel 10:18) now permanently resident in the city itself. Her light is likened to a jasper stone, clear as crystal, the same stone that opened the throne vision at 4:3, so that the whole city now wears what once only surrounded the throne. Glory has moved from being seen around God to shining out of the place he lives with his people.

Revelation 21:12-14

twelve gates: The wall carries twelve gates, named for the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve foundations, named for the twelve apostles of the Lamb, Israel and the church built into the same city rather than one replacing the other, the anti-supersessionism the whole book has kept from the 144,000 of chapter 7 onward. Three gates open to each compass point, the pattern of Israel's own camp around the tabernacle (Numbers 2), so that access is offered from every direction with none favored. Tribes at the gates and apostles at the foundations together carry the whole of God's dealing with his people into the eternal city.

Revelation 21:15-17

The measuring angel carries a golden reed to measure the city, the gates, and the wall, the same measuring that ran through Ezekiel's temple vision (Ezekiel 40-42) now applied to the city itself. Twelve thousand furlongs on each side, length, breadth, and height equal, describes a perfect cube, the same shape as the Holy of Holies in Solomon's temple (1 Kings 6:20), so that the whole city becomes the space where God's presence once dwelt behind a veil. The wall's own measure, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel, ties the number twelve, squared and multiplied by itself, to the city three separate times.

Revelation 21:18-21

The building material named first is jasper, the same stone that opened the throne vision and the city's own glory at verse 11, wrapped now around the whole wall, while the city itself is pure gold, like unto clear glass, gold so refined it has become transparent. Twelve foundations carry twelve stones in order, jasper through amethyst, the same list of stones, in different order, that Aaron wore on the high priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:17-20), Israel's twelve tribes worn on the priest now built into the city's foundation. The twelve gates are twelve pearls, one to a gate, a single stone cut wide enough to be a city gate, and the street itself is pure gold, transparent as glass, so that even the ground is precious.

Revelation 21:22-23

John looks for the temple and finds none, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it, the building that measured the presence of God through every earlier chapter of the Bible now unnecessary because the presence itself fills the city without mediation. The sun and moon are likewise unneeded, for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof, the first creation's ordinance of Genesis 1:16 exceeded by direct glory. What Israel's tabernacle and temple pictured in shadow, a place to meet God through priest and veil, stands here as the city's own furniture, God and the Lamb its only sanctuary and its only sun.

Revelation 21:24-26

The nations of them which are saved walk in the city's light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honour into it, Isaiah's own picture of the nations streaming to Zion (Isaiah 60:3, 60:11) fulfilled at last in the eternal city rather than the earthly one. The gates are never shut by day, and there is no night there to close them, an open city needing no defense because nothing hostile survives to enter it. Glory that once belonged to Babylon and to the beast's kingdoms is here surrendered to their rightful owner, brought in rather than seized.

Revelation 21:27

The final word on the city is a door held shut against one kind of visitor only: there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie, the same three marks, defilement, abomination, and lying, that barred entry to Babylon's own judgment scene in chapters 17 and 18. What decides entry is not merit but a record, they which are written in the Lamb's book of life, the book named at 3:5, 13:8, and 20:12, kept open through the whole book and closed here on its final page. The city's gates stand open, and its guest list is already settled.
