Luke 7:1-5

When he had ended all his sayings he entered into Capernaum, and a centurion whose servant was dear unto him and ready to die sends the elders of the Jews to plead for him. Luke alone gives the embassy and its argument, he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue, the portrait of a Gentile God-fearer commended by Israel's own elders; the black basalt synagogue foundation at Capernaum under the later white one is the evidence lane's candidate for his gift. The bench notes the double courtesy of the scene, a Roman officer honoring the people he garrisons, and elders pleading for a Roman: the chapter opens with walls already lower than the reader expects.

Luke 7:6-8

Then Jesus went with them, and the centurion's second embassy meets him on the road: Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof, and Luke adds a clause Matthew lacks, neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee. In Matthew the centurion speaks in person, in Luke through friends, and the bench resolves it without strain by the ordinary rule that a man acts in his messengers, while noting Luke's telling heightens the humility the man himself claims. His argument stands as the chapter's theology in a soldier's grammar: I also am a man set under authority, and I know a word of command needs no presence, so say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

Luke 7:9-10

Jesus marvelled at him, one of the two recorded marvellings of the Lord, here at a Gentile's faith as at Nazareth's unbelief, and turned to say to the crowd, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. The commentators weigh what drew the commendation: not the man's generosity or humility alone but his estimate of Jesus' word, that distance is nothing to it. The messengers return and find the servant whole; Luke the physician records the cure without ceremony, the word having done at a distance what the centurion believed it would.

Luke 7:11-15

A city called Nain, a day's walk from Capernaum on the slope of the hill of Moreh, and two processions meet at its gate: the crowd of life around Jesus and the crowd of death around a bier carrying the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, four words holding her whole ruin, grief and destitution together. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, splanchnizomai, Luke's deepest mercy verb, and the initiative is entirely his: no one asks, no faith is stated, he simply says Weep not and touches the bier, taking on ceremonial defilement to stop the procession. Young man, I say unto thee, Arise: the dead sits up and speaks, and he delivered him to his mother, the miracle's aim stated in the giving back. The bench sets the scene beside Elijah at Zarephath, one town over the same hill, where the same giving-back clause closes the older story.

Luke 7:16-17

A great prophet is risen up among us, the crowd concludes, and, God hath visited his people: the Zarephath echo has done its work, for a widow's son raised beside the hill of Moreh could only recall Elijah and Elisha. The fear that comes on all is the old awe before holiness, and the glorifying of God channels it rightly. The commentators note the crowd's category is true but small, prophet where the chapter is building toward more, and the rumour that runs through all Judea carries the question John's disciples will bring in the next scene.

Luke 7:18-23

The disciples of John carry the reports to their master, and from prison he sends two of them asking, Art thou he that should come, or look we for another; the bench treats the question with honesty about its difficulty, the greatest of the prophets asking for reassurance when he hears of works without the axe and fan he had preached, and the commentators divide between real perplexity and a question staged for his disciples' sake, both readings named. Jesus answers with evidence rather than assertion, curing many in that same hour and sending back an Isaiah catalogue: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached, Isaiah 35 and 61 audited in the street. The gentle beatitude closes it, blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me, a word for John and for every believer whose expectations God fulfills in his own order.

Luke 7:24-28

What went ye out into the wilderness for to see, Jesus asks when the messengers leave, defending John to the crowd the moment he cannot hear the praise: no reed shaken with the wind, no courtier in soft raiment, but a prophet, and much more than a prophet, the messenger of Malachi 3:1 sent before the Lord's own face. Among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John, the highest commendation any man receives in the Gospels, and then the saying that reorders everything: he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. The bench reads greatness of privilege, not of character, for the least believer stands inside what John only announced; the old order's summit is the new order's threshold.

Luke 7:29-35

All the people and the publicans justified God, being baptized with John's baptism, while the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves; Luke states the divide as history before Jesus states it as parable. The generation is like children in the marketplace whose games neither dirge nor dance can please: John came fasting and they said, He hath a devil; the Son of man came eating and drinking and they said, a gluttonous man, a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. The bench notes the Lord repeats the slur unretracted, for the friendship it mocks is the gospel itself, and the sinner about to weep at his feet will prove it. But wisdom is justified of all her children: those the wisdom of God has won vindicate her ways, whichever dress those ways wore.

Luke 7:36-39

One of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him, and Jesus goes, the friend of sinners equally willing at a critic's table. A woman of the city, which was a sinner, the phrase a settled reputation, enters with an alabaster box, stands at his feet behind him weeping, washes his feet with tears, wipes them with her loosed hair, kisses them, and anoints them; reclining at table made the posture possible, and every act spends what her world counted her shame. The bench holds the old identification questions where the text leaves them: she is unnamed, she is not said to be Mary Magdalene, and this scene in Galilee is distinct from the Bethany anointing of passion week. Simon's unspoken verdict, this man, if he were a prophet, would have known what manner of woman this is, sets up the chapter's last irony, for Jesus answers the thought he was not supposed to know.

Luke 7:40-43

Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee, and the parable of the two debtors is the shortest in Luke: one owed five hundred pence, the other fifty, and when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. The word rendered frankly forgave is the grace verb, echarisato; both debts are cancelled as gift, and the only variable left is the love of the forgiven. Which of them will love him most, Jesus asks, and Simon's careful I suppose concedes the case before he sees where it lands: Thou hast rightly judged. The bench notes the parable grants Simon his premise, the woman's debt really is the greater on the ledger, and defeats him with it.

Luke 7:44-46

Seest thou this woman, Jesus asks Simon, turning toward her while speaking to him, and the question cuts because Simon has seen only a category. The reckoning runs item by item: no water for my feet, but tears; no kiss of greeting, but she hath not ceased to kiss my feet; no oil for my head, but ointment for my feet. The commentators note these were courtesies a host might omit without scandal, so the contrast is not Simon's rudeness but his measured, minimal welcome beside her extravagance; love is the difference, and the audit merely makes it visible.

Luke 7:47-50

Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: the bench is careful with the logic, and the parable just told settles it, love follows forgiveness as gratitude follows the cancelled debt, so her love is the evidence of her pardon, not its purchase price, and the closing clause confirms the order, to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. Thy sins are forgiven, he says to her directly, and the table asks the chapter's real question, Who is this that forgiveth sins also, the same question the paralytic's scene raised and the same implicit answer. The last word is hers to keep: Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. Faith, not tears or ointment, is named as the instrument, and peace is the state she leaves in, the chapter that began with a dying servant ending with a healed soul.
