Luke4chapter 4

Luke 4:1-2

Jesus returns from the Jordan full of the Holy Ghost and is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, the same Spirit that descended as a dove now driving him toward confrontation rather than away from it. Forty days recalls Israel's forty years and Moses' forty days on Sinai, the wilderness testing that Israel failed now faced by the true Israel who will not fail it. Luke says he did eat nothing, the physician's plain report of a fast at its outer limit, and hunger is stated only after the forty days close, the ordinary need arriving before the extraordinary trial that follows.

Luke 4:3-4

The first temptation strikes at the point of need after forty days without food, if thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread, the devil questioning the very sonship the Father had just declared at the Jordan. Jesus answers from Deuteronomy 8:3, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God, the verse Moses spoke of the manna years, when God let Israel hunger to teach that dependence on his word outweighs dependence on bread. The bench reads the answer as a pattern for every form of this temptation, that legitimate need never licenses a shortcut around the Father's will, and that Scripture met Scripture rather than argument meeting argument.

Luke 4:5-8

The devil offers a shortcut to the throne Jesus will indeed receive, all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, all this power will I give thee, for that is delivered unto me, a claim of derived authority over a fallen order the New Testament elsewhere names as under the sway of a usurping ruler. The condition is worship, if thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine, the crown offered without the cross, the kingdom without Calvary. Jesus answers from Deuteronomy 6:13, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve, refusing the throne on any terms but the Father's, and choosing the long road through suffering that the temptation offered to skip entirely.

Luke 4:9-12

The third temptation moves to Jerusalem and turns Scripture itself into the tool, cast thyself down from hence, for it is written, he shall give his angels charge over thee, Psalm 91 quoted accurately but applied wrongly, a promise of protection in the path of obedience twisted into a license to force God's hand outside it. Jesus answers a third time from Deuteronomy, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God, the same principle that met Israel's grumbling at Massah when the people demanded proof rather than trusting the proof already given. The bench notes the devil can quote Scripture and still lie, since a true text wrenched from its context becomes a false doctrine, and the remedy is not a rival sign but the next verse rightly read.

Luke 4:13

When the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season, the Greek phrase marking not a final defeat but a truce until an appointed time, and the bench hears in that clause the whole passion still ahead, Gethsemane and Calvary as the hour the tempter returns in force. Luke's ordering of the three temptations differs from Matthew's, the pinnacle and the kingdoms reversed, and the commentators hold both explanations without forcing a verdict, that Matthew follows a climactic order ending at the mountain while Luke follows Jerusalem's own centrality to his narrative. Either way the season names a real interval, not a settled peace, and the wilderness victory does not retire the enemy from the rest of the story.

Luke 4:14-15

in the power of the Spirit: Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, the same Spirit who led him into the wilderness now marking his public ministry, and a fame of him went out through all the region round about before a single miracle in Galilee is even recorded. He taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all, the ordinary pattern of his early ministry, welcome and wonder before the offense that Nazareth is about to give. The bench reads verse fourteen as Luke's own summary heading over the whole Galilean section, power received in temptation now spent in teaching.

Luke 4:16-17

He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, Luke noting a lifelong habit of worship rather than a single visit, the carpenter's town that raised him now hearing him read. Standing to read was itself an honor extended to him, and the book of the prophet Esaias delivered into his hands need not be read as an accident of any fixed lectionary cycle, since the bench holds a set first century reading calendar as tradition rather than a floor-checked fact. He found the place where it was written, the verb suggesting he turned to Isaiah 61 deliberately rather than reading whatever fell open, choosing the text that would announce him.

Luke 4:18-19

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Isaiah 61:1-2 read aloud in his own synagogue, anointed to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, give recovery of sight to the blind, set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, and Jesus stops there, mid verse, before Isaiah's next clause, the day of vengeance of our God. The bench treats the stopping point as deliberate and significant, the first coming announcing grace while the day of vengeance waits for a later reading at a second coming, the same half quoted verse the church has used ever since to hold the two advents apart. The acceptable year recalls the Jubilee of Leviticus 25, release of debts and captives and land, and Jesus reads his own ministry as the reality that year only pictured.

Luke 4:20-21

He closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down, the posture of a rabbi about to teach rather than merely read, and Luke's small detail, the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him, catches the whole room leaning in before he speaks a word. This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears, the shortest and most direct messianic claim Luke records, present tense, in this room, in this reading, not someday but today. The commentators mark today as one of Luke's signature words, the same today that will meet the penitent thief at the cross, salvation arriving in the present rather than only in a promised future.

Luke 4:22-23

gracious words: All bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, the crowd's first reaction genuine admiration, though is not this Joseph's son already carries the seed of offense, familiarity narrowing what they can accept from a neighbor's boy. Jesus answers a question they have not yet asked aloud, Physician, heal thyself, whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here, naming the demand for a hometown miracle before it is voiced. The bench reads the proverb as their unspoken standard, that Nazareth expected proof on its own soil equal to what Capernaum reportedly received, a test Jesus refuses to pass on those terms.

Luke 4:24-27

No prophet is accepted: No prophet is accepted in his own country, Jesus states as a settled principle before proving it from Israel's own history, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, yet unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow, a Gentile chosen over every Israelite widow of the famine years. Many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus, and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian, a second Gentile favored over the home nation, and the parallel is exact, both stories drawn from the Elijah and Elisha cycle, both crossing Israel's border to bless outsiders. The bench reads this as the sermon's real content, not merely an explanation of why Nazareth will see no miracle, but a preview of the whole Gospel's course, grace moving to the Gentiles when Israel's own towns refuse it, the pattern the book of Acts will trace at length.

Luke 4:28-30

All they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, the Elijah and Elisha comparison landing exactly as a rebuke of their own unbelief, admiration curdling into murder within the space of a sentence. They thrust him out of the city and led him to the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong, the traditional cliff still shown above Nazareth today, mob violence disguised as a legal stoning for blasphemy. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, Luke's spare report of an escape the text does not explain, whether by a restraint laid supernaturally on the crowd or simply the confusion of a mob unable to agree on carrying its own anger through, and the bench names both readings without settling which.

Luke 4:31-32

He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, the town by the lake that becomes his base for the rest of the Galilean ministry after Nazareth's rejection, the descent both geographic, from the hill country to the lake shore, and thematic, the true prophet welcomed where the hometown refused him. They were astonished at his doctrine, for his word was with power, the same authority that will soon command an unclean spirit and a fever, teaching and healing both flowing from one source. The bench contrasts the astonishment here with the wrath just left at Nazareth, the same word from the same mouth landing as power in one town and offense in another, the difference lying entirely in the hearers.

Luke 4:33-35

A man which had a spirit of an unclean devil cries out in the synagogue itself, the demon's confession more accurate theology than the congregation has yet managed, I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God, the unclean spirit naming what Nazareth would not confess. Jesus rebukes him with a word, hold thy peace, and come out of him, refusing testimony from an unclean source even when the content is true, and the spirit obeys at once, throwing the man down without further harming him. The bench notes the double proof in one scene, authority over evil spirits demonstrated publicly and the demon's forced silence itself an act of that authority, since a confession true as it is comes at the wrong time from the wrong witness.

Luke 4:36-37

They were all amazed, and spake among themselves, what a word is this, for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out, the crowd naming exactly what Luke has been showing since the temptation, word and deed carrying one authority. The fame of him went out into every place of the country round about, the second such report in this chapter, Nazareth's rejection doing nothing to slow what Capernaum now spreads. The bench reads the repeated fame notices as Luke's own commentary, that rejection in one place never stops the gospel's advance in another.

Luke 4:38-39

Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, Luke the physician's own clinical distinction, since ancient medical writers classed fevers by severity and this one was reckoned the serious kind, a detail Mark and Matthew do not preserve in the same terms. He stood over her, and rebuked the fever, the same verb used against the demon in the synagogue, sickness and unclean spirits met with the same word of command rather than treated as different categories of problem. Immediately she arose and ministered unto them, the healing complete enough to resume ordinary service at once, a small recovery of strength the bench reads as a pattern for every healing this Gospel records, restored to serve, not merely to rest.

Luke 4:40-41

When the sun was setting, the sabbath's close by Jewish reckoning, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him, and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them, a whole town's grief brought to one door in a single evening. Devils also came out of many, crying, thou art Christ, the Son of God, and he rebuking them suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ, the same refusal of demonic testimony as in the synagogue, true words silenced because the source is unclean and the timing is his to set. The bench notes the messianic secret pattern beginning here, Jesus controlling how and when his identity is disclosed rather than letting the wrong voices announce it first.

Luke 4:42-44

When it was day, he departed and went into a desert place, withdrawing after a night of ministry to be alone, and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them, Capernaum wanting to keep for itself what Nazareth had thrown away. I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for therefore am I sent, his answer, refusing to become a settled healer in one grateful town because the mission was never local, and he preached in the synagogues of Galilee closes the chapter where it opened, in the synagogues, with the wilderness testing now proven across a whole province of ministry. The bench reads the must as the same necessity that will later set his face toward Jerusalem, obedience to a sent purpose outweighing even a welcome as warm as Capernaum's.
